Granite and Gastronomy: Freycinet's High Points

Today was all about challenging ourselves physically and rewarding ourselves with the incredible flavors of Freycinet. We embraced the rugged beauty of this national park, tackling a challenging hike and indulging in some of the region's best cuisine. It was a day of contrasts, from the demanding climb to the serene views, and from the simple pleasures of a hearty breakfast to the sophisticated tastes of a gourmet dinner.

Our day began early, with breakfast at Freycinet Lodge [i, 16]. The Bay Restaurant offered a stunning view of Coles Bay as we fueled up for our hike. I enjoyed a delicious breakfast, while David opted for a hearty plate of eggs and Sophie devoured her pancakes. It's amazing how a good breakfast can set the tone for the entire day. The staff were incredibly friendly, making us feel right at home.

Fueled and ready, we set off to conquer Mount Amos. The trailhead was easy to find, and the initial part of the hike was a pleasant walk through the eucalyptus forest. However, the real challenge began as we started ascending the granite slopes. The climb was steep, requiring us to scramble over rocks and use our hands for support. I was grateful for my hiking boots, which provided the necessary grip on the sometimes slippery surfaces. Sophie, surprisingly, loved the challenge, her little legs finding holds I sometimes struggled to locate. David, ever the supportive husband, was always there to lend a hand and offer encouragement.

The climb may have been strenuous, but the panoramic views from the summit made every drop of sweat worthwhile.

The Hazards themselves are a sight to behold. These pink granite mountains dominate the landscape, their color due to the orthoclase feldspar within the granite. As we climbed higher, the views of Coles Bay and Great Oyster Bay became increasingly breathtaking. The lower position of the sun in October cast a warm glow on the landscape, enhancing the pink hues of the granite.

Reaching the summit of Mount Amos was an exhilarating experience. The panoramic views of Wineglass Bay and the Freycinet Peninsula were simply stunning. We spent a good while at the top, soaking in the beauty and taking photos. Sophie was particularly excited, pointing out the various landmarks and sharing her observations about the landscape. It's moments like these that make our family trips so special.

The descent was just as challenging as the ascent, requiring careful footing and a good sense of balance. We took our time, ensuring our safety and enjoying the different perspective on the landscape. Back at the base, we were tired but incredibly satisfied with our accomplishment. We stopped by the Freycinet National Park visitor centre to refill our water bottles and browse the displays. It’s a great place to learn more about the park's natural and cultural heritage. I also picked up a small souvenir for my mom, a beautiful postcard featuring Wineglass Bay.

For lunch, we headed to Fish At Freycinet, eager to sample some of the local seafood. The restaurant was bustling with activity, and we were lucky to get a table with a view of the water. I ordered the grilled fish, while David opted for the fish and chips. Sophie, of course, chose the calamari. The food was fresh and delicious, a true taste of Tasmania. I made a mental note to try to recreate some of these dishes back home in Toronto.

After lunch, we decided to do some shopping at the Freycinet National Park shop. I was hoping to find some insect repellent, as I had forgotten to pack it. Unfortunately, they were out of stock, so I made a note to buy some in Coles Bay tomorrow. I did manage to find some extra SD cards for my camera, which was a relief, as I was already running low on storage space.

In the late afternoon, we took a leisurely stroll along one of the many beaches in the park. The weather was perfect, with a gentle breeze and plenty of sunshine. Sophie loved collecting seashells, while David and I enjoyed the peace and tranquility of the surroundings. It's amazing how calming the sound of the waves can be.

As evening approached, we made our way to Granite Freycinet for dinner. This cafe transforms into a pizza and cocktail destination in the evenings. We sat on the deck, soaking up the last rays of sun and enjoying the lively atmosphere. I ordered a local wine, while David chose a signature cocktail. Sophie, of course, opted for a Shirley Temple. The pizzas were delicious, with fresh, local ingredients and a crispy crust. It was the perfect way to end a perfect day.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore Coles Bay Lookout and Bluestone Bay. We are also hoping to visit Malting Lagoon Brewing for a taste of local beer. I’m looking forward to another day of adventure and discovery in this beautiful part of the world.

As I sit here, writing this blog post, I can't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to experience this incredible place with my family. Freycinet National Park has exceeded all of my expectations, and I know that we will cherish these memories for years to come. It's a reminder that sometimes, the best things in life are the simplest: a challenging hike, a stunning view, and the love of family.

“The best view comes after the hardest climb.”
