Solo Adventure in Norway's Rondane National Park
Day 7: A Day of Scenic Routes and Mountain Views in Rondane
Exploring Rondane's beauty: Grimsdalsvegen's panoramic views, Strømbu's architecture, and culinary delights at local restaurants. A perfect day!
Chasing Horizons in Rondane
Today was a day of embracing the open road and soaking in the majestic beauty of Rondane National Park. It’s days like these that remind me why I traded the predictable comfort of Toronto for the unpredictable allure of solo travel. The blend of stunning vistas and quiet contemplation is exactly the kind of reset my soul craves.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at Rondane Høyfjellshotell. The buffet was a delightful spread, offering everything from fresh pastries to traditional Norwegian fare. Fuelled up and ready to go, I set out to explore the famed Grimsdalsvegen.

The drive along Grimsdalsvegen was nothing short of spectacular. This gravel road winds its way between Rondane and Dovre National Parks, offering panoramic views of Jotunheimen National Park in the distance. The road has been used since the 1600s. The landscape was a mix of cultural heritage and natural beauty, with old summer mountain pastures dotting the route. I stopped frequently to capture the scenery, the camera working overtime to try and encapsulate the sheer scale of the landscape. The fresh air was invigorating, carrying the scent of wildflowers and distant snow. It was a toll road, but the automated system made it easy to pay the fee online.
The best views come after the hardest climbs.
Next on the itinerary was Strømbu, a rest stop that’s also a gateway to Rondane. Strømbu is easily accessible and offers a roof terrace with views of the Atna River. The modern architecture of the rest area was a pleasant surprise, blending seamlessly with the natural surroundings. I took some time to stretch my legs and enjoy the view from the roof terrace, watching the Atna River wind its way through the landscape. It’s amazing to think that Henrik Ibsen set part of Peer Gynt here.

Lunch was at Rondane Gjestegård, a charming inn known for its cozy atmosphere. The food was delicious, with a focus on local ingredients. It was a comforting and satisfying meal that perfectly complemented the day’s adventures. It felt like a genuine taste of Norway, far removed from the international cuisine I often encounter in Toronto.

The day concluded with dinner at Spidsbergseter Resort Rondane. The resort is beautiful, and the dinner was a fitting end to a day of exploration. I enjoyed the meal, although some reviewers have noted that the dinner menu can be limited. The staff were friendly, and the overall atmosphere was relaxing.

Before heading back to my accommodation, I made a quick stop at INTERSPORT in Otta. I needed to pick up a portable charger, realizing I had forgotten to pack one. It’s a small thing, but essential for keeping my devices running during these long days of hiking and exploring. Luckily, the shop had exactly what I needed, and I was back on the road in no time.

As I reflect on today, I’m struck by the simple beauty of Rondane. The majestic mountains, the winding roads, and the charming local establishments all contribute to an experience that is both invigorating and deeply peaceful. It’s a reminder that sometimes the greatest adventures are found not in grand gestures, but in the quiet moments of connection with nature.
Tomorrow, I plan to explore Peer Gynt seterveg and perhaps take a dip in Karlsvogna Fjellbad. I’m also looking forward to checking out Ysteriet, a local bar. Until then, I’ll rest up and dream of the landscapes that await.
As Sophie gets older, I think about how wonderful it would be to bring her and David here. Maybe next year, we can all explore Norway together. For now, I'm grateful for this solo journey, a chance to recharge and reconnect with myself amidst the stunning scenery of Rondane.
