A Day of Scenic Wonders

The beauty of Rondane National Park continues to unfold, and today was all about embracing the journey. I set out to explore the Peer Gynt seterveg, a scenic route steeped in folklore, and later found myself unwinding at Karlsvogna Fjellbad. It was a day of contrasts, from winding mountain roads to soothing waters, perfectly capturing the essence of a solo adventure.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Rondane Fjellstue. Fuelled with traditional Norwegian fare, I felt ready to tackle the day's adventures. The Fjellstue itself is something of a landmark, built in the early 1900s, and you can really feel the history in its walls. It’s the perfect spot to soak in the atmosphere before heading out into the park.

With the car packed, I embarked on the Peer Gynt seterveg. This toll road, named after Henrik Ibsen's famous character, is an experience in itself. As I drove, the landscape transformed into a tapestry of lush forests, glistening lakes, and distant mountain peaks. The road, partly unpaved, added a touch of ruggedness to the journey, making it all the more exciting.

Sometimes, the most beautiful discoveries are made when you least expect them, on a path less travelled.

I made a stop at what I believe was Krøkla, the highest point on the Peer Gynt Seterveg at 1109 meters above sea level. The views were simply breathtaking, offering a panorama of Rondane and Jotunheimen in the distance. The air was crisp and clean, and the silence was broken only by the occasional bird call. It was a moment of pure serenity, a reminder of why I chose this solo escape. Apparently, there's even a spot nearby called Mjølbøla that's always covered in snow. I didn't spot it today, but it's something to look out for next time. From what I read, it is possible to hike Gråhøa from Krøkla, but I didn't have enough time to try it.

Driving along Peer Gynt seterveg, I couldn't help but think of David and Sophie back in Toronto. Sophie would have loved the little mountain farms dotted along the route, and David, with his architect's eye, would have appreciated the way the buildings blend seamlessly into the landscape. I made a mental note to bring them here someday, to share this incredible experience with my family.

The Peer Gynt Seterveg is more than just a scenic drive; it's a journey through Norwegian folklore and history. The road is named after Peer Gynt, a character created by Henrik Ibsen, inspired by stories from this very region. As I drove, I imagined Ibsen himself travelling through these landscapes, gathering inspiration for his play. It gave me a deeper appreciation for the connection between nature and art.

After hours of driving and soaking in the scenery, I decided it was time for a change of pace. Karlsvogna Fjellbad, a water park nestled in the mountains, beckoned. I must admit, the idea of a water park in the middle of a national park seemed a bit surreal, but I was intrigued.

Upon arrival, I was greeted by a modern facility with water slides, swimming pools, and relaxation areas. It was a welcome contrast to the rugged landscapes I had been exploring all day. I changed into my swimsuit and dove straight into the refreshing water. The slides were exhilarating, and the pools were perfect for a leisurely swim. It was exactly what my muscles needed after a day of driving.

As I floated in the pool, surrounded by the stunning mountain views, I couldn't help but smile. This was the perfect way to end the day. The combination of adventure and relaxation was exactly what I needed on this solo trip. I even treated myself to some local delicacies at the on-site refreshments area.

Before heading back, I decided to try the Ysteriet bar. I opted for a local beer and chatted with some of the locals, learning more about the area and its history. It turned out that the Ysteriet was originally a dairy that operated for 60 years. It was fascinating to hear stories about the old days and how the community has evolved over time.

For dinner, I chose Rondane friluftssenter AS. The meal was hearty and delicious, providing the perfect end to a day filled with exploration and relaxation. I felt a sense of contentment as I reflected on the day's adventures. The Peer Gynt seterveg and Karlsvogna Fjellbad had offered two distinct experiences, both equally rewarding.

Back at my accommodation, I reviewed my plans for tomorrow. Storfurua and Jøra Bru Dombås are on the itinerary. I'm particularly intrigued by Storfurua, which I believe is a giant pine tree. It should be a great way to connect with nature and appreciate the ancient forests of Rondane. I'm also planning to grab breakfast at Spidsbergseter Resort Rondane and lunch at Rondane Gjestegård. And perhaps I'll find some time to visit Hjertefryd, a local shop.

As I write this, I feel a sense of gratitude for the experiences I've had today. Rondane National Park continues to surprise and delight, offering a perfect blend of adventure and tranquility. I'm excited to see what tomorrow brings, and I know that this solo journey will continue to be a source of inspiration and renewal.

Switzerland, with its own stunning landscapes, will always be home, but Norway is quickly capturing a piece of my heart. The rugged beauty, the friendly people, and the sense of peace I find here are truly special.
