Solo Adventure in Norway's Rondane National Park
Day 2: Chasing Curves and Culinary Delights in Rondane National Park
Exploring scenic routes, savoring local cuisine, and discovering hidden gems in Rondane National Park on a solo adventure.
Day 2: Twists, Turns, and Tastes of Rondane
Today was all about embracing the journey, both literally and figuratively. I set out to explore the scenic routes of Rondane, and ended up discovering so much more than just stunning views. It was a day of winding roads, delicious food, and quiet reflection amidst the majestic Norwegian landscape.
The day began with a hearty breakfast at Spidsbergseter Resort Rondane. I fuelled up with a traditional Norwegian spread, including freshly baked bread, local cheeses, and smoked salmon. Remembering the portable charger I forgot (again!), I made a mental note to add it to my permanent travel checklist. David would have reminded me, but this solo trip is also about remembering to do these things on my own. After breakfast, I was ready to hit the road.
My first stop was Rondasvingen, a viewpoint known for its breathtaking panoramic views. The drive there was an experience in itself, with winding roads carving through the landscape. I stopped several times along the way to capture the beauty, the air crisp and clean. The landscape was a mix of green valleys and snow-capped peaks, a classic Norwegian vista. When I arrived at Rondasvingen, I was not disappointed. The view stretched out before me, a vast expanse of mountains and valleys bathed in sunlight. I spent a good hour there, simply soaking it all in and taking photos. It’s moments like these that remind me why I love to travel solo – the freedom to linger and truly appreciate the scenery.

The beauty of solo travel lies not just in seeing new places, but in discovering new parts of yourself.
Next on the itinerary was Kuse Svingen, another scenic viewpoint. The drive to Kuse Svingen was equally stunning, with even more twists and turns. I think I spotted some cross-country ski trails. At Kuse Svingen, the view was different but equally impressive. This viewpoint offered a closer perspective of the mountains, with a clear view of the valleys below. I decided to take a short hike along one of the trails, stretching my legs and enjoying the solitude. The trail was well-marked and easy to follow, leading me through a forest of birch and pine. The silence was broken only by the sound of birdsong and the rustling of leaves. It was incredibly peaceful, a welcome escape from the hustle and bustle of Toronto. I even managed to spot some wildflowers along the path, adding a splash of color to the green landscape. Hiking always reminds me of our family trips in the Swiss Alps when I was a child. I wonder if Sophie will develop the same love for the mountains.

By lunchtime, I was ready for a break, and I headed to Rondane Friluftssenter AS for a bite. This place had a cozy, rustic charm, and the menu featured traditional Norwegian dishes. I opted for a hearty reindeer stew, served with flatbread and lingonberry jam. It was the perfect comfort food after a morning of driving and hiking. While eating, I chatted with some of the locals, learning more about the area and its history. They shared stories of Sami culture and traditions, and I was fascinated by their connection to the land. It's these interactions that make travel so enriching, offering a glimpse into different ways of life.

With my belly full and my spirit refreshed, I decided to indulge in a spot of local culture. I made my way back towards Spidsbergseter, drawn by the promise of a unique experience at Aquavitfjøset Spidsbergseter. This bar is located in an old stone barn dating back to 1850 and boasts a collection of over 75 different brands of aquavit. I sampled a few different varieties, each with its own distinct flavor and aroma. The bartender was knowledgeable and passionate, sharing the history and production methods of this traditional Scandinavian spirit. It was a fun and informative experience, a true taste of Norway. I even considered buying a bottle to take home to David, but then I remembered how much space my hiking boots were taking up in my luggage.

As evening approached, I drove to Rondane Høyfjellshotell for dinner. The hotel is nestled in the mountains, offering stunning views of the surrounding landscape. The restaurant specializes in local cuisine, with a focus on fresh, seasonal ingredients. I enjoyed a delicious meal of grilled Arctic char, served with roasted vegetables and a creamy dill sauce. The fish was incredibly fresh and flavorful, a testament to the quality of the local produce. The hotel had a spa, Karlsvogna Fjellbad, with an indoor pool, sauna, hot tub and steam bath.

After dinner, I took a stroll around the hotel grounds, enjoying the cool evening air and the quiet solitude. I reflected on the day's adventures, feeling grateful for the opportunity to explore this beautiful part of the world. I thought about how much Sophie would have loved splashing in the pool. I thought about David and his architecture. I made a mental note to plan a family trip back to Norway in the future, so they could experience it with me.
As I prepared for bed, I glanced at the itinerary for tomorrow. It looks like I will be exploring the NASJONAL TURISTVEG Rondane, a scenic route with sightseeing stops. I am also hoping to visit Huset med det rare I, a shop that sounds intriguing. I drifted off to sleep, dreaming of more scenic drives and culinary delights.
Today was a reminder that travel is not just about seeing new places, but also about experiencing new things and connecting with the local culture. And sometimes, it's about simply enjoying the peace and quiet of nature, away from the stresses of everyday life. I am already looking forward to tomorrow's adventures!
