Day 1: Whispers of Water and Views That Inspire

Today marked the beginning of my solo adventure in Rondane National Park, and what a start it has been! The crisp mountain air, the vast landscapes, and the sheer tranquility of being surrounded by nature – it’s exactly the kind of reset I needed. Leaving David and Sophie back in Toronto was tough, but I know they’re cheering me on as I explore this stunning corner of Norway. After all, I promised Sophie I'd bring back lots of stories.

My journey began with a flight from Toronto to Oslo, followed by a train to Otta. From there, I hopped on a local bus that ferried me closer to the park's embrace. The anticipation had been building for months, ever since I first envisioned this solo escape. I was so excited to finally be here, ready to immerse myself in the Norwegian wilderness. It's funny the things you forget when packing – I realized I'd left my portable charger and first aid kit at home. Luckily, I was able to pick those up at the Mysusæter butikk later in the day.

My first stop was Vesleulfossen, a waterfall said to be one of the tallest in Rondane National Park. The hike to get there was absolutely invigorating. The trail wound through lush greenery, with the sound of rushing water growing louder with each step. It was a bit muddy in places, but nothing my hiking boots couldn't handle. I even passed several smaller waterfalls along the way, each with its own unique charm. The landscape felt ancient and untouched, a world away from the hustle and bustle of Toronto. The climb was worth it. When I finally reached Vesleulfossen, I was greeted by a breathtaking sight. The water cascaded down the steep cliffs, creating a mesmerizing spectacle of power and beauty. I spent a good hour simply sitting there, soaking it all in. It was the perfect way to start my trip, a reminder of nature's grandeur and its ability to inspire awe.

Sometimes, the greatest adventures are found not in conquering mountains, but in the quiet moments of reflection they inspire.

After Vesleulfossen, I made my way to Sohlbergplassen, a viewpoint offering panoramic views of Atnasjøen Lake and the Rondane mountains. The platform itself is a work of art, designed by architect Carl-Viggo Hølmebakk to blend seamlessly with the natural surroundings. As I stood there, gazing out at the vista before me, I understood why this spot had inspired the famous Norwegian artist Harald Sohlberg to paint “Winter's Night in Rondane”. The landscape was simply stunning, with the lake mirroring the sky and the mountains standing tall and proud in the distance. I could almost feel the presence of the artist, capturing the essence of this place with his brush.

I decided to grab lunch at Rondane Fjellstue. The fjellstue, or mountain lodge, was built in the early 1900s and you can feel the history in its walls. I enjoyed a simple but hearty meal, fueling up for the rest of my day. The warmth of the lodge was inviting, and I chatted with a few other hikers, exchanging stories and tips about the park. It’s always nice to connect with fellow travelers, especially when you’re on a solo journey. It reminds you that you’re not alone, even when you’re surrounded by wilderness.

Later in the afternoon, I stopped by Mysusæter butikk, a local shop where I picked up a few essentials I had forgotten. It's a charming little place, filled with local goods and friendly faces. I managed to find a portable charger, a first aid kit, and some extra snacks for my hikes. I also grabbed a local map of the area, just to be on the safe side.

For dinner, I treated myself to a meal at Rondane Haukliseter Fjellhotel. The hotel is nestled in the mountains, offering stunning views of the surrounding landscape. The food was delicious, a mix of traditional Norwegian dishes and international flavors. The atmosphere was cozy and welcoming, and I felt right at home as I enjoyed my meal. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploring, a chance to relax and reflect on all that I had seen and done.

As I write this, I'm back at my accommodation, a cozy little cabin I found near the park entrance. The sun has set, and the stars are beginning to appear in the night sky. The air is still and quiet, save for the gentle sounds of nature. I’m already looking forward to tomorrow, when I plan to explore Rondasvingen and Kuse Svingen [Rondasvingen, Kuse Svingen]. I might even stop by Aquavitfjøset Spidsbergseter for a drink in the evening [Aquavitfjøset Spidsbergseter]. It’s supposed to be a unique experience, and I’m always up for trying new things. I think I'll have breakfast at Spidsbergseter Resort Rondane, and lunch at Rondane friluftssenter AS [Spidsbergseter Resort Rondane, Rondane friluftssenter AS].

But for now, it’s time to rest and recharge. Tomorrow is another day, another adventure waiting to unfold. And I can’t wait to see what Rondane has in store for me.

Goodnight from the heart of Norway,
Ursula
