Giants and Bridges: A Day of Discovery
Today was a day of quiet contemplation and exploration, perfectly suited to the serene atmosphere of Rondane National Park. It's amazing how quickly the days are passing on this solo adventure. I feel like I'm truly connecting with the landscape, discovering hidden gems and soaking in the tranquility that only a solo journey can provide. While I miss David and Sophie terribly, I know they'd be proud of me for embracing this time for myself. Today was all about experiencing the ancient beauty of Norway, from towering trees to historic bridges, and savoring the local flavors along the way.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at Spidsbergseter Resort Rondane. The free breakfast offered a delightful spread. Fuelled up for the day, I set out to find Storfurua, a landmark I'd read about that promised a unique encounter with nature.
The drive to Storfurua was an adventure in itself, winding through narrow roads with stunning views of the park. The landscape was a vibrant mix of greens and browns, with the occasional splash of color from wildflowers. I finally parked and followed a small path that led into the woods.
Reaching Storfurua was like stepping into another world. This ancient pine tree stood tall and proud, a silent witness to centuries of history. Its gnarled branches reached towards the sky, and its massive trunk exuded an aura of strength and resilience. The air was fresh and clean, carrying the scent of pine and damp earth. I spent a good hour simply sitting at the base of the tree, lost in thought and feeling an incredible sense of peace. I imagined all the stories this tree could tell if it could speak. It was a humbling experience, a reminder of the enduring power of nature. Storfurua is a captivating tourist attraction renowned for its striking natural beauty. The serene environment offers visitors a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the splendor of the great outdoors, making it a perfect destination for nature enthusiasts and photographers alike.

Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found in the quietest corners of the world.
Leaving Storfurua, I felt a renewed sense of connection to the natural world. My next stop was Jøra Bru at Dombås, a historic railway bridge that promised a glimpse into Norway's engineering past.
The drive to Dombås was scenic, taking me through rolling hills and past charming villages. Arriving at Jøra Bru, I was immediately struck by its impressive size and elegant design. The stone arch bridge spanned the Jora River, a testament to the skill and craftsmanship of its builders. I learned that construction began in 1912 and was completed in 1919. The bridge has a main span of 54 meters. I spent some time walking around the area, admiring the bridge from different angles and reading about its history. It was fascinating to learn about the challenges the engineers faced in building such a structure in this remote location. The Jøra Bru is an elegant construction and is the next longest stone arch bridge on the Norwegian railway network.

For lunch, I stopped at Rondane Gjestegård. The cozy atmosphere was just what I needed after a morning of exploring. I enjoyed a traditional Norwegian meal, savoring the flavors of the local cuisine. The Gjestegård had a welcoming atmosphere.
After lunch, I decided to indulge in a little retail therapy at Hjertefryd, a local shop in Sel. It was a charming little store filled with unique crafts and souvenirs. I picked up a few small items as gifts for Sophie and David, wanting to bring them a piece of Norway back home with me. I always enjoy finding unique, locally made items when I travel, and Hjertefryd did not disappoint.

As evening approached, I made my way to Rondane Fjellstue for dinner. This mountain lodge exuded a rustic charm, with its wooden beams and cozy fireplace. The dinner was delicious, a hearty and satisfying end to a day of exploration. Rondane Fjellstue was built in the early 1900s and there is a lot of history within its walls.

It's a place where you can find peace and inspiration, and I'm grateful for the chance to experience its magic. I feel so fortunate to be able to spend this time alone, exploring this beautiful part of the world. It's moments like these that remind me of the importance of taking time for myself, of reconnecting with nature, and of appreciating the simple things in life.
Tomorrow, I'm planning to visit Heidal Husky and Nygruva [if I don't get lost!]. Before heading to Heidal Husky, I will be sure to have breakfast at Rondane Høyfjellshotell. I am looking forward to learning more about these amazing animals and exploring another part of the park. I might even stop by Woody's Bar AS for a drink in the evening. It is important to be flexible when you are on a solo trip.
As I sit here writing, I am already excited about the adventures that await me tomorrow. But for now, I am content to savor the memories of today, the whispers of the ancients echoing in my heart.
