Rhythms of the River

Today was a symphony of sights, sounds, and tastes, all orchestrated by the mighty Rio Madre de Dios. From the vibrant energy of a local market to the serene beauty of the rainforest canopy, I experienced a day that truly captured the essence of Tambopata. It's days like these that remind me why I crave these solo adventures—the freedom to explore, to connect, and to simply be present in the moment.

The day began with a hearty breakfast at Restaurante MOSHE. Fuelled up, I set out to explore the local culture. My first stop was Plaza Verde - Bio tienda Amazónica. I wanted to find some ethically sourced souvenirs. As someone who tries to live sustainably, I was thrilled to find a shop dedicated to showcasing the talents of local artisans and promoting eco-friendly products. I picked up a beautiful hand-woven bracelet made from rainforest seeds. I also bought some natural insect repellent. I seem to have forgotten the sunscreen, but at least I can protect myself from mosquito bites.

With my small shopping spree complete, it was time to head to the river. The Rio Madre de Dios, or Mother of God River, is the lifeblood of this region. Its brown waters wind through the rainforest, providing sustenance and transportation for both wildlife and people. I boarded a small boat, eager to experience the Amazon from a different perspective. The air was thick with humidity, and the sounds of the jungle enveloped me as we set off.

The river is a constant reminder of the power and resilience of nature, a force that shapes the landscape and sustains all life within it.

The boat ride itself was an adventure. The riverbanks were teeming with life. I spotted colorful macaws soaring overhead, their calls echoing through the trees. Caimans basked lazily in the sun, their scales glistening in the light. I even caught a glimpse of a family of capybaras, the world's largest rodents, grazing peacefully on the river's edge.

After a couple of hours on the water, we arrived at Mirador al Rio, a viewing point that promised panoramic views of the river and surrounding rainforest. The climb to the top was a bit steep, but the reward was well worth the effort. From the summit, the vista was breathtaking. The Rio Madre de Dios snaked its way through the emerald green canopy. The sheer scale of the Amazon was awe-inspiring, a reminder of the planet's incredible biodiversity.

I spent a good hour at the Mirador, simply soaking in the view and reflecting on my journey so far. It's moments like these that make solo travel so special. There's no one to distract you, no schedule to adhere to, just the freedom to be present and appreciate the beauty of the world around you.

For lunch, I stopped at El Tambo, a local restaurant known for its traditional Peruvian cuisine. I ordered a plate of *juane*, a flavorful rice dish cooked in banana leaves and filled with chicken, olives, and hard-boiled eggs. It was the perfect fuel for an afternoon of further exploration.

Back in Puerto Maldonado, I decided to take a stroll through the town, eager to experience the local culture. The streets were bustling with activity, vendors selling everything from fresh produce to handmade crafts. I stopped to admire the colorful murals that adorned many of the buildings, each one telling a story about the region's history and traditions. I thought about David and Sophie back home in Toronto. I imagined them loving the vibrant colors and the lively atmosphere.

As the sun began to set, I made my way to MARACUYEAH for dinner. The restaurant was located on a rooftop terrace, offering stunning views of the city skyline. I ordered a *ceviche*, a traditional Peruvian dish made with fresh fish marinated in citrus juices and spices. It was the perfect way to end a day filled with adventure and discovery.

The Tambopata National Reserve is slightly seasonal, with its tropical temperature around 17 – 39 degrees Celsius (45ºF – 103ºF). November to April marks the wet season in Tambopata.

Tomorrow, I plan to delve deeper into the heart of the rainforest with a visit to La Base Tambopata and Chacra del chuyachaqui. I’m also planning to grab a drink at the Bamboo Bar Tiki Hut. I can't wait to see what adventures await me as I continue to explore this incredible corner of the world. It’s supposed to rain, but that will be part of the adventure!

I'm also reminded of a quote from Isabelle Eberhardt, a Swiss explorer and writer, who perfectly captured the spirit of adventure:

To wander is to be alive.

And that's exactly how I feel right now—alive, connected, and utterly grateful for the opportunity to explore this incredible planet. I feel like I am starting to understand the soul of the Amazon, one day at a time. Perhaps I will bring David and Sophie here next time.
