Today was all about immersing ourselves in the heart of Serra da Estrela, specifically the charming town of Manteigas. I was eager to explore its historical roots, soak in the panoramic views, and, of course, indulge in some local cuisine. Liam, as always, was a great sport, ready to wander and discover alongside me. With the sun shining and a gentle breeze in the air, it was the perfect day to explore.

Our first stop was the Centro Histórico de Manteigas, Serra da Estrela. The historical center of Manteigas is a gem, offering stunning views and a rich cultural experience. Wandering through the streets, I felt transported back in time. The traditional architecture, with its granite houses and narrow cobblestone streets, told stories of generations past. Manteigas, known as the mountain village, sits next to the valley of the River Zêzere. It's definitely more rural than other parts of the Sierra. We took our time, admiring the details of each building and soaking in the atmosphere. I couldn't help but think about my own hometown of Konstanz, with its similar blend of history and natural beauty. It’s amazing how different places can evoke similar feelings of warmth and nostalgia.

After our historical immersion, it was time for breakfast. We headed to Primor Serra, a local spot that came highly recommended. It was a delightful experience. I opted for a local pastry and a strong coffee, while Liam chose a hearty sandwich. Energized, we were ready for our next adventure: the Miradouro do Fragão do Corvo.

The drive up to Miradouro do Fragão do Corvo, Manteigas was an adventure in itself. As we climbed higher, the views became increasingly spectacular. Finally, we reached the viewpoint, and I was speechless. From this vantage point, at 1450 meters high, we were treated to a panoramic vista of Manteigas, the Zêzere Glacier Valley, and even the distant Serra da Estrela. The Miradouro do Fragão do Corvo offers a sweeping view of the high village of Manteigas and the beautiful Zêzere valley. The fresh mountain air invigorated us as we took in the breathtaking scenery. Liam, ever the photographer, snapped away, trying to capture the grandeur of the landscape. I simply stood there, feeling grateful for the opportunity to witness such natural beauty. The Covão Cimeiro is one of the most stunning examples of a cirque glacier in the Serra da Estrela. As we hiked through the area, I imagined the immense ice sheets that once covered these mountains. The dramatic cliffs and U-shaped valleys were a stark reminder of the forces that have shaped our planet. I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe and respect for the natural world.

After a morning of exploration, our stomachs were beginning to rumble. For lunch, we chose Taberna A Laranjinha, a local favorite known for its traditional Portuguese cuisine. This was a fantastic choice. Taberna A Laranjinha is known for it's tapas. The staff was very helpful and explained all the items in detail. I decided to try one of their local dishes, while Liam opted for a hearty stew. The food was delicious, and the atmosphere was warm and inviting. It was the perfect place to relax and refuel after our morning adventures. The restaurant has a great quality-price ratio.

With renewed energy, we decided to indulge in a little retail therapy. Boutique Presunto 2 was our next stop, a charming shop that specializes in local products. I'm always on the lookout for unique souvenirs and gifts, and this boutique did not disappoint. We sampled various cheeses and cured meats, learning about the local culinary traditions from the friendly staff. I ended up buying a small jar of honey and a piece of Serra cheese, both of which I knew would be perfect reminders of our trip. It's these small, local experiences that truly enrich a journey.

As the day drew to a close, we decided to treat ourselves to a pre-dinner drink at Skyline. This bar offered stunning views of Manteigas and the surrounding mountains. Sipping on a glass of local wine, we watched as the sun began to set, casting a golden glow over the landscape. It was the perfect way to end a perfect day. Skyline Cafe-Bar offers the best view of the city.

For dinner, we chose Restaurante Paragem Serradalto, a restaurant known for its regional dishes and cozy atmosphere. We were not disappointed. The restaurant has excellent food and a fantastic view. I opted for the Novilho com Fruta, which was excellent. Liam chose the trout. The service was friendly and attentive, and the food was simply divine. It was the perfect culinary experience to cap off our day of exploration. The portions are large.

Reflecting on the day, I realized how much we had experienced in just a few hours. From the historical charm of Manteigas to the breathtaking views from Miradouro do Fragão do Corvo, every moment was special. The local cuisine, the friendly people, and the stunning natural beauty all combined to create an unforgettable experience. As we headed back to our accommodation, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to explore this hidden gem in Portugal. Tomorrow we're off to Covão d'Ametade, Miradouro Nave de Santo Antonio, and Poio Estrela. I'm looking forward to more adventures with Liam in this beautiful region.
