Mountain Magic: Lakes, Lookouts, and Local Life
Today was a day of sheer discovery, a tapestry woven with the threads of natural beauty, historical intrigue, and the simple joys of local life. Serra da Estrela continued to unveil its secrets, offering us glimpses into its soul that I know Liam and I will cherish forever. It’s amazing how a change of scenery can make you appreciate life so much!
Our morning began with a hearty breakfast at As Thermas in Unhais da Serra. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee and the promise of traditional Portuguese pastries filled the air, setting the perfect tone for our adventures. I opted for a strong café com leite and a *pastel de nata*, while Liam, ever the traditionalist, went for the *pão com manteiga* (bread with butter) and a black coffee. Fuelled up, we were ready to embrace the day. It’s funny, I never used to be a breakfast person, but travelling seems to have changed that!
Our first stop was the enchanting Covão d'Ametade. As we approached, the landscape transformed into a scene straight out of a fairy tale. This glacial valley, cradled by the imposing Cântaro Magro, was a symphony of greens and blues. The birch trees, with their delicate leaves, danced in the gentle breeze, creating a mesmerizing spectacle. The air was crisp and clean, carrying the scent of pine and damp earth. It was so quiet and peaceful, a welcome change from the hustle and bustle of Dublin.

We strolled along the banks of the Zêzere River, which meandered through the valley, its waters crystal clear. The reflections of the surrounding mountains shimmered on the surface, creating a surreal effect. I couldn't resist dipping my fingers into the icy water – a truly invigorating experience! We spent a good hour simply soaking in the beauty of this place, feeling a profound connection with nature. I can see why this place is so popular with hikers and nature lovers. It’s truly magical.
The best view comes after the hardest climb.
Next on our itinerary was the Miradouro Nave de Santo Antonio. The drive there was an adventure in itself, with winding roads that climbed higher and higher into the mountains. As we ascended, the views became increasingly breathtaking. Finally, we reached the *miradouro*, and I was simply speechless. The panoramic vista that unfolded before us was nothing short of spectacular. The vastness of the Serra da Estrela stretched out in every direction, a tapestry of rolling hills, verdant valleys, and rocky peaks. The air was thin and crisp, and the wind whipped around us, carrying the scent of wildflowers and distant rain.

From our vantage point, we could see the Poio do Judeu, a massive granite boulder perched precariously on the edge of the mountain. Legend has it that this rock provided shelter for a shepherd and his flock during a fierce storm, a testament to the resilience of both nature and man. Liam, ever the history buff, was fascinated by the geological formations and the stories they held. I, on the other hand, was content to simply gaze at the landscape, feeling a sense of awe and wonder. I really need to buy a travel guide, I feel like I'm missing out on so much of the history!
After taking countless photos (I’m sure my Instagram followers are getting tired of mountain views!), we decided to find a spot for lunch. Our destination: Montes Herminios, a restaurant known for its regional cuisine. We drove through charming villages, each one seemingly more picturesque than the last. Eventually, we arrived at the restaurant, nestled amidst the hills. The aroma of roasting meat wafted through the air, making our stomachs rumble in anticipation.

We were greeted by the friendly owner, who ushered us to a table with a view of the valley. The restaurant was cozy and inviting, with stone walls, wooden beams, and a crackling fireplace. We perused the menu, which was filled with traditional Portuguese dishes. I opted for the *cabrito assado* (roasted goat), while Liam chose the *arroz de marisco* (seafood rice).
The food was simply divine. My *cabrito* was tender and succulent, infused with the flavors of garlic, rosemary, and olive oil. Liam's *arroz de marisco* was a symphony of seafood, with prawns, mussels, and clams mingling in a rich, savory broth. We savored every bite, accompanied by a bottle of local red wine. It was the perfect culinary experience, a true taste of Portugal. I definitely need to try and recreate that dish when we get home.
With our bellies full and our spirits high, we set off for our final destination of the day: Poio Estrela. This viewpoint offered yet another perspective on the Serra da Estrela, showcasing its rugged beauty in a different light. The sun was beginning to set, casting a golden glow over the landscape. The shadows lengthened, creating a dramatic effect on the hills and valleys. We watched as the sky transformed into a canvas of oranges, pinks, and purples, a breathtaking display of nature's artistry.

As we stood there, hand in hand, I couldn't help but feel grateful for this incredible journey. Serra da Estrela had exceeded all my expectations, revealing itself as a place of unparalleled beauty, rich history, and warm hospitality. It was a reminder that sometimes, the greatest treasures are found in the most unexpected places. Plus, Liam seems to be enjoying himself which is always a bonus!
Before heading back to our accommodation, we stopped by Con.M'Irla, a local bar in Unhais da Serra. We enjoyed a couple of glasses of local wine and chatted with some of the locals. It was a great way to wind down after a long day of exploring. The people here are so friendly and welcoming. They were keen to share stories about the region and offer recommendations for our trip.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore more of Serra da Estrela's hidden gems, including Cabeça do Mouro and Miradouro do Vale Glaciar. I am particularly excited about Miradouro do Penedo c'Abana/Penedo Oscilante, and I'm looking forward to seeing what other culinary delights await us. I also want to check out Serra Shopping, maybe I can find a new eco-friendly jacket! Until then, *adeus*!
P.S. I really need to remember my sunglasses tomorrow, the sun is so strong up here!
