A Day of Mouros, Glaciers, and Oscillating Stones

Today was all about vistas that stretched forever, tastes that told stories, and stones that seemed to defy gravity. Serra da Estrela continued to surprise and enchant us, proving that Portugal's highest mountain range is a treasure trove of experiences.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Restaurante Medieval. The name itself conjured images of knights and castles, and the ambiance didn't disappoint. The restaurant is located in Luna Hotel Serra da Estrela , which is the highest altitude hotel in Portugal. I savored every bite, knowing we needed the energy for the day's adventures. Liam, ever the early bird, had already mapped out our route, eager to hit the road. I made a mental note to buy a travel guidebook later, as I was still kicking myself for forgetting it.

Our first stop was Cabeça do Mouro , which translates to 'Moor's Head'. The drive there was scenic, with winding roads and glimpses of the vast landscape. When we arrived, the views were breathtaking. It felt like standing on the edge of the world, with the Serra da Estrela stretching out before us in all its glory. The air was crisp and clean, carrying the scent of pine and wildflowers. The views reminded me of hiking in the Wicklow Mountains back in Ireland, although this was definitely on a grander scale. The granite rock formation resembles a human head when viewed from a certain angle. I could see the resemblance, especially with a bit of imagination. Liam, of course, took dozens of photos, trying to capture the perfect angle. I just breathed deeply and soaked it all in.

Sometimes, the most unforgettable moments are found in the quiet corners of the world, where nature's grandeur speaks volumes.

Next on our itinerary was Miradouro do Vale Glaciar , the viewpoint overlooking the Glacier Valley. As we drove, the landscape transformed into a rugged, almost lunar terrain. The valley itself was immense, a testament to the power of nature. I tried to imagine the glaciers that had carved this landscape millennia ago. It was humbling to stand there, contemplating the forces that had shaped the world around us. We spent a good hour simply gazing at the valley, identifying the different rock formations, and discussing the geological history of the area. I felt a sense of awe and respect for the natural world, a feeling that always grounds me and reminds me of what truly matters.

For lunch, we stopped at Casa do Clube. This tapas and wine bar offered a cozy and relaxed atmosphere. We sampled local cheeses and cured meats , washing them down with a crisp Vinho Verde. The food was simple but delicious, highlighting the fresh, local ingredients. The interior has a picturesque, rustic ambience. It's the perfect place to unwind after a morning of exploring, and we chatted with some locals, picking up tips for our next adventure. Casa do Clube is known for cheese boards, cured meats, gins, cocktails and wines.

Our final stop of the day was Miradouro do Penedo c'Abana / Penedo Oscilante. This 'oscillating rock' is a geological curiosity, a large boulder that seems to teeter precariously on the edge of a cliff. The views from the miradouro were stunning, overlooking the Mondego River and the surrounding countryside. The rock is 3 meters high and 4 meters wide. Legend has it that you can make the rock move if you find the right spot and apply enough pressure. Of course, Liam was determined to try. He pushed and prodded, but the rock remained stubbornly still. I laughed, reminding him that some things are best left to the mysteries of nature. Even without the rock moving, the views and the sense of wonder made it a worthwhile stop.

Before dinner, we decided to indulge in a little retail therapy at Serra Shopping. I needed to replace the sunglasses I had forgotten at home, and Liam was on the hunt for a new portable charger. The shopping center itself was modern and well-designed, with a good mix of local and international brands. It was a welcome change of pace after a day of exploring the rugged landscapes. I found a stylish pair of eco-friendly sunglasses, and Liam finally found a charger that met his exacting standards.

As evening approached, we made our way to Lenda Viriato for dinner. The restaurant's theme revolves around Viriato, a Lusitanian hero who fought against the Roman Empire. The building dates back to 1905 and was once the village's communal oven. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, with traditional décor and friendly staff. The food was hearty and delicious, with a focus on regional specialties. I tried the 'Tornedó de Vitela', a veal dish with Serra da Estrela cheese and farinheira , while Liam opted for the roasted goat. Both were excellent, and we savored every bite.

After dinner, we decided to check out Happy Bar. It was lively, with a mix of locals and tourists enjoying the evening. We ordered a couple of local beers and soaked in the atmosphere. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploration and discovery.

Tomorrow, we plan to visit Miradouro Santa Catarina , Miradouro Serra do Açor , and Lagoa Serrano. I'm particularly excited about Lagoa Serrano, as I've heard it's a hidden gem. Before that, we'll have breakfast at Churrasqueira Serrana, followed by lunch at Bar da Prainha. We'll also visit A Loja do Brás for some local crafts. And in the evening, we'll unwind at Vida Santa.

As I write this, I'm filled with a sense of gratitude for the experiences we've had today. Serra da Estrela is a place that nourishes the soul, offering a blend of natural beauty, cultural richness, and warm hospitality. I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.

It's moments like these that make me appreciate the simple things in life – good food, good company, and the beauty of the natural world. And as I drift off to sleep, I'm already dreaming of tomorrow's adventures.
