Sunday Serenity in Gerês

Today was all about embracing the natural beauty of Peneda-Gerês National Park. I set out to explore some of its most scenic spots, and the day unfolded into a perfect blend of breathtaking views and refreshing encounters with nature. From panoramic vistas to cascading waterfalls, every moment felt like a postcard come to life.

My Sunday started with a hearty breakfast at Restaurante Retiro do Gerês. I fuelled up with some traditional Portuguese pastries and strong coffee, ready for a day of exploring. The restaurant had a lovely, rustic feel, and I could tell it was a popular spot with locals and tourists alike. It was the perfect way to start the day, surrounded by the sounds of chatter and the aroma of freshly baked bread.

First on the agenda was Miradouro de Junceda. The drive there was an adventure in itself, winding through narrow, twisting roads with glimpses of the valley below. The roads were a bit rough in places, but nothing my trusty bus couldn't handle. As I climbed higher, the views became more and more spectacular. When I finally reached the *miradouro*, I was absolutely blown away. The panoramic vista stretched out before me, encompassing the entire Gerês valley. I could see the Caniçada reservoir shimmering in the distance and the rolling hills fading into the horizon. The air was crisp and clean, and I felt like I was on top of the world.

The best view comes after the hardest climb.

I spent a good hour at Miradouro de Junceda, just soaking it all in. I took dozens of photos, trying to capture the sheer scale and beauty of the landscape. I even saw a few other hikers passing through, all equally awestruck by the view. It was a reminder of why I love solo travel so much – the freedom to linger in places that move me and to connect with nature on my own terms. The sun was warm, but there was a gentle breeze, making it perfect for a picnic. I had packed some cheese and bread from a local shop, and I enjoyed a simple lunch while gazing out at the vista. It was one of those moments where everything felt just right.

After the *miradouro*, I set off towards Pitões das Júnias cascata. The drive took me through more winding roads and charming villages. Pitões das Júnias itself is a quaint, traditional village, and I couldn't resist stopping for a quick stroll. The stone houses, narrow streets, and friendly locals gave me a glimpse into a simpler way of life. I even saw a few farmers tending to their fields, using traditional methods that have been passed down for generations.

The walk to the *cascata* was relatively short, but the path was a bit rocky and uneven. I was glad I had my hiking boots on! As I approached the waterfall, I could hear the sound of rushing water growing louder and louder. Finally, I rounded a bend, and there it was – a stunning waterfall cascading down a rocky cliff into a crystal-clear pool below. The sight was truly magical. The water was so clear that I could see the bottom of the pool, and the surrounding vegetation was lush and green. I took a moment to simply stand and admire the scene, feeling the cool mist on my face.

I spent the afternoon exploring the area around the *cascata*. I found a few different viewpoints, each offering a unique perspective on the waterfall. I even ventured down to the pool at the base of the falls and dipped my toes in the water. It was freezing cold, but incredibly refreshing! I could have easily spent the entire day there, but I wanted to make sure I had enough time for dinner. Before heading back, I took a moment to reflect on the day. The combination of stunning views and the invigorating waterfall had left me feeling refreshed and rejuvenated. It was exactly the kind of experience I had hoped for when planning this solo adventure.

For lunch, I stopped at Encosta do Rio, a charming restaurant nestled near the river. I opted for a traditional Portuguese dish of grilled sardines, which were fresh and delicious. The restaurant had a lovely outdoor seating area, and I enjoyed my meal while listening to the gentle sound of the river flowing by. It was a peaceful and relaxing experience, and the perfect way to refuel after a morning of hiking.

As evening approached, I made my way to Bem Cozinhado for dinner. This restaurant came highly recommended, and I was eager to try their *cozido à portuguesa*, a hearty stew that's a local specialty. The restaurant was cozy and inviting, with a warm, welcoming atmosphere. The *cozido* was absolutely delicious, packed with a variety of meats and vegetables. It was the perfect comfort food after a long day of exploring. The staff were friendly and attentive, making me feel right at home. I savored every bite, knowing that this was a true taste of Portugal.

To cap off the day, I decided to check out Chamadouro Bar. I had heard it was a great spot for a relaxing drink with a view. The bar was small and rustic, with a laid-back atmosphere. I ordered a glass of local wine and settled in to enjoy the sunset. The views from the bar were stunning, overlooking the mountains and valleys of Gerês. It was the perfect way to unwind and reflect on the day's adventures. As I sipped my wine and watched the sun dip below the horizon, I felt a sense of contentment wash over me. This solo trip to Peneda-Gerês National Park was turning out to be exactly what I needed – a chance to reconnect with nature, explore new places, and discover a bit more about myself.

Tomorrow, I plan to tackle Pico da Nevosa, the highest point in the park. I also want to find Fonte da Batoca, which I've heard is a beautiful natural spring. I'll be having breakfast at Restaurante Fojo dos Lobos, lunch at O Pimpão, and dinner at Espreita. I'm also hoping to stop by Peneda Gerês Adventure Center by Tobogã to see if they have any interesting souvenirs or gear. I'm looking forward to another day of adventure and discovery in this beautiful corner of Portugal.

As I head back to my campsite, I can't help but feel grateful for the experiences of the day. Peneda-Gerês National Park has a way of captivating you with its natural beauty and tranquil atmosphere. It's a place where you can truly escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life and reconnect with yourself and the world around you. Tonight, as I drift off to sleep under the stars, I'll be dreaming of waterfalls, panoramic vistas, and the simple joys of solo travel. I am so glad I didn't forget my rain jacket, as the weather in the mountains can be unpredictable, even in July. I am still kicking myself for forgetting the sunscreen and insect repellent, though. I will definitely buy some tomorrow.

This trip is exactly what I needed after a busy few months back in Dublin. Liam has been so supportive of my solo adventures, and I know he's looking forward to hearing all about it when I get back. Maybe next time, I can convince him to come along. I know he would love the hiking and the stunning scenery. He's probably at home right now, working on some new software project. I miss him, but I also cherish this time to myself. It's a chance to recharge, reflect, and rediscover what's important to me. Maybe I will even get some inspiration for my work at the sustainable packaging company. Being in nature always sparks new ideas and perspectives. The peace and quiet of the park are a welcome change from the hustle and bustle of city life.

I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings. Good night from Peneda-Gerês National Park!
