Reaching New Heights

Today was all about pushing my limits and embracing the raw beauty of Peneda-Gerês National Park. It was a day filled with challenging hikes, breathtaking vistas, and moments of serene reflection amidst nature's grandeur. I set out early, eager to conquer the highest peak in the park and discover hidden gems along the way.

The aroma of freshly brewed coffee and warm bread at Restaurante Fojo dos Lobos set the perfect tone for the day. It's amazing to find such a gem tucked away in the mountains, offering vegan options no less! I savored a hearty breakfast, fueling up for the adventures that lay ahead. I made sure to pack a few extra pastries for a mid-morning snack on the trail. It reminded me of the bakeries back in Konstanz, always filled with the comforting scent of home.

My first destination was Pico da Nevosa, the highest point in Peneda-Gerês. The trail was demanding, a relentless ascent that tested my endurance. The air was crisp and cool, a welcome change from the summer heat. As I climbed higher, the landscape transformed into a tapestry of green valleys and rugged peaks. I paused frequently, not just to catch my breath, but to soak in the panoramic views that stretched as far as the eye could see. I was so glad I remembered to pack my hiking boots; I almost forgot them in Dublin. Liam would have never let me hear the end of it.

Reaching the summit of Pico da Nevosa was an exhilarating experience. The sense of accomplishment washed over me as I stood at 1548 meters, gazing out at the world below. The wind whipped around me, carrying whispers of ancient tales and the untamed spirit of the mountains. I took a moment to simply be present, to feel the earth beneath my feet and the vastness of the sky above. It was a moment of pure, unadulterated bliss.

Sometimes, the greatest adventures are the ones we embark on alone, allowing us to connect with nature and ourselves on a deeper level.

The descent from Pico da Nevosa was equally challenging, requiring careful footing and unwavering focus. My knees definitely felt the strain. I was reminded of hiking in the Wicklow Mountains with Liam, although this was definitely more intense. I made my way towards Fonte da Batoca, a hidden spring known for its crystal-clear waters. The trail led me through dense forests and over rocky terrain, each step revealing new wonders of the park's biodiversity. The sounds of nature enveloped me – the rustling of leaves, the chirping of birds, and the gentle murmur of flowing water.

Arriving at Fonte da Batoca was like stepping into a hidden oasis. The spring gurgled with life, its waters so pure and refreshing that I couldn't resist taking a long, satisfying drink. I sat by the spring for a while, listening to the water's soothing melody and allowing its tranquility to wash over me. It was the perfect spot for quiet contemplation, a moment to reflect on the day's adventures and the beauty that surrounded me.

After my revitalizing break at Fonte da Batoca, I decided to swing by Peneda Gerês Adventure Center by Tobogã, hoping to find some sunscreen, as I had forgotten mine. While they didn’t have what I needed, they did have some maps, and I ended up buying one of the park's lesser-known trails. I also picked up a small, hand-carved wooden wolf as a souvenir for Liam. He's always been fascinated by wolves and their symbolism of strength and independence.

For lunch, I stopped at O Pimpão, a charming restaurant in Gerês known for its traditional Portuguese cuisine. I savored a hearty meal of grilled meats and local vegetables, soaking in the cozy atmosphere and friendly service. It was a welcome respite after a long day of hiking, a chance to replenish my energy and savor the flavors of the region. They were so lovely, and I made a mental note to try and recreate the potatoes at home. I am sure Liam would love that.

As the day drew to a close, I made my way to Espreita for dinner. This restaurant is renowned for blending nature and flavor, and it certainly didn't disappoint. I indulged in a delicious meal while enjoying panoramic views of the park. The sunset painted the sky in hues of orange and purple, creating a magical ambiance that perfectly capped off my day of exploration.

Reflecting on the day, I realized that Peneda-Gerês National Park is more than just a destination; it's an experience that touches the soul. It's a place where you can challenge yourself physically, connect with nature on a profound level, and discover hidden gems that leave you in awe. My thoughts drifted to tomorrow’s itinerary, the Cascata de Fragas de Pena Má and the Espigueiro de Alecrimes. I am also looking forward to a drink at the Marina Bar.

As I settle into my tent for the night, I feel a deep sense of gratitude for this incredible journey. Camping here, under the vast, starlit sky, brings a sense of peace I rarely experience in Dublin. I'm already looking forward to tomorrow's adventures, eager to explore more of what this park has to offer.

I must remember to buy sunscreen tomorrow. I think I might be a little burned. It's always the same, even though I know how sensitive my skin is.

I am so looking forward to seeing Liam again and telling him all about it. I am sure he will be happy to hear about the wolf I bought for him.
