Last Day Musings: Cascades, Fountains, and Flavors of Gerês

As my solo adventure in Peneda-Gerês National Park draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the incredible experiences of the past ten days. This final day was a perfect encapsulation of everything that makes this place so special: stunning natural beauty, intriguing history, and, of course, delicious food. It’s funny how a place can feel so remote and yet so deeply connected to the heart of Portuguese culture. Today was all about savoring those last moments and etching them into my memory.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at O Pimpão in Gerês. I opted for a traditional Portuguese pastry and a strong coffee, fueling up for a day of exploration. The reviews I'd read online mentioned the excellent breakfast, and they certainly didn't disappoint! The staff were friendly, and the atmosphere was cozy, making it a perfect start to the day. I made a mental note to bring Liam here someday; he would love the view of the river from the balcony.

First on my itinerary was Cascata da Laja, a waterfall known for its romantic atmosphere. The reviews I read described it as a majestic cascade, and I was eager to see it for myself. The drive there was scenic, with winding roads offering glimpses of the park's stunning landscapes. When I arrived, I wasn't disappointed. The waterfall was indeed beautiful, with water cascading down the rocks amidst lush greenery. Wooden bridges added to the charm, making it a perfect spot for quiet contemplation. I spent some time simply listening to the sound of the water and soaking in the tranquility of the place. It wasn't really a place for swimming, but the natural beauty more than made up for it. I took some photos, trying to capture the essence of the scene, but as always, the reality was far more impressive than any photograph could convey.

Nature is not a place to visit. It is home.

Next, I ventured to Fonte do Paço, an ancient fountain site with Templar connections. According to local history, the site comprises two wells and a small spring, once used for water consumption. The smaller well used a 'nora' or 'picota' to elevate the water, supported by a stone with a circular hole. The larger well, always communal, was renovated in 1953, as evidenced by an inscription and a cross on its wall. A stone step allowed easier access to the water, later used to hold petrol motors for irrigation in the 20th century. It was fascinating to imagine the people who had gathered here centuries ago, drawing water and sharing stories. The site exuded a sense of history and tradition, reminding me of the deep roots of this region.

For lunch, I decided to try Restaurante Pedra Bela Gerês. The reviews mentioned its panoramic views and pleasant atmosphere, and I was curious to experience it. I opted for a traditional Portuguese dish, arroz de marisco (seafood rice), and a glass of Vinho Verde. The food was delicious, and the view was indeed stunning, overlooking the Gerês mountains. The service was attentive, and the overall experience was delightful. It was a perfect spot to relax and savor the flavors of Portugal.

After lunch, I took a leisurely stroll through the village of Gerês, soaking in the atmosphere and browsing the local shops. I picked up a few souvenirs for Liam and my family back in Germany – some locally made crafts and a bottle of Vinho Verde. I also couldn't resist buying some Queijo da Serra, a regional cheese that I had grown to love during my stay. I also noted that there was Granfondo Terras de Basto, a cycling event, that had taken place earlier in the month. It sounded like fun!

In the late afternoon, I decided to visit Petiscos da Bó Gusta, a local bar known for its tapas. I ordered a selection of petiscos, including pão com chouriço (bread with chorizo) and pataniscas de bacalhau (codfish fritters), and a glass of local beer. The atmosphere was lively, with locals and tourists mingling and chatting. The tapas were delicious, and the beer was refreshing – a perfect way to unwind after a day of exploring. The reviews I read had praised the friendly service and the authentic atmosphere, and I couldn't agree more. I struck up a conversation with a local, who shared some insights about the region's history and culture. It was a reminder of the warmth and hospitality of the Portuguese people.

As the sun began to set, I made my way to Lurdes Capela for dinner. The reviews mentioned its traditional Portuguese cuisine and cozy atmosphere, and I was eager to try it. I opted for another local specialty, naco na pedra (steak on a stone), and a glass of red wine. The steak was served on a hot stone, allowing me to cook it to my liking. It was a unique and delicious experience, and the red wine was a perfect accompaniment. The atmosphere was indeed cozy, with a fireplace adding to the ambiance. The service was friendly and efficient, making it a perfect end to my culinary journey in Gerês.
