Solo Adventure in Peneda-Gerês National Park

A Day of Panoramic Vistas and Village Vibes

Today was all about embracing the heights and the heart of Gerês. I ventured out to capture the stunning landscapes from above and immerse myself in the local culture. It was a day filled with breathtaking views, delightful encounters, and flavors that truly represent this beautiful region.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Encosta do Rio. It's a charming spot known for its authentic Portuguese cuisine and stunning natural surroundings. It was the perfect fuel for a day of exploration.

First on the agenda was Miradouro da Fraga Negra. The drive there was an adventure in itself, winding through narrow roads with lush greenery on either side. Arriving at the viewpoint, I was immediately struck by the panoramic vista. From this vantage point, the valley of the Gerês River unfolded beneath me, a tapestry of green fields, quaint villages, and the shimmering Caniçada reservoir in the distance. The air was crisp and clean, carrying the scent of pine and wildflowers. I spent a good hour simply soaking in the view, snapping photos, and feeling grateful for the chance to witness such natural beauty.

Sometimes, the most rewarding experiences are the ones that allow you to pause, breathe, and simply appreciate the beauty that surrounds you.

Next, I set my sights on Cabana da Rocalva. The drive was quite scenic, and I was excited to see this shelter. The surrounding landscape was rugged and beautiful. I spent some time exploring the area, taking in the views and enjoying the solitude. It was a great spot to connect with nature and reflect on my journey so far.

After my morning adventures, lunch was at Restaurante Cerdeira. The restaurant is famed for its traditional gastronomy, offering dishes made with quality, local ingredients. I decided to try the *costeletão* (veal chop), a regional specialty. The meat was incredibly tender and flavorful, perfectly seasoned and grilled to perfection. Paired with a glass of local Vinho Verde, it was a meal to remember. The restaurant itself had a cozy, welcoming atmosphere, with friendly staff who were eager to share their knowledge of the local cuisine.

With my belly full and my spirits high, I decided to explore the local shops in Gerês. My stop was Xana's Cosmetics. I ended up buying a small bottle of locally made lavender oil; the owner of the shop was incredibly friendly, sharing stories about the region and recommending other places to visit. For dinner, I chose Vai... Vai Gerês. It's a popular spot known for its stylish presentation and delicious food. I opted for a *francesinha*, a Portuguese sandwich originating from Porto. It was delicious! It was the perfect way to end a day of exploring the natural and cultural beauty of Gerês.

As the sun began to set, casting a golden glow over the mountains, I couldn't help but feel a sense of contentment. Today had been a perfect blend of natural beauty, cultural immersion, and culinary delights. I'm so grateful for the chance to experience this beautiful region and share it with you all.

Tomorrow marks the final day of my solo adventure here in Peneda-Gerês National Park. It's bittersweet, as I'm eager to return home to Liam and share my stories, but I'm also reluctant to leave this tranquil paradise. I plan to visit Cascata da Laja and Fonte do Paço. And, of course, I'll be sure to indulge in one last Portuguese meal at Lurdes Capela and perhaps enjoy a drink at Petiscos da Bó Gusta. I'm determined to make the most of every last moment, soaking in the beauty and serenity of this incredible place.
