Day 1: A Day of Enchantment: Exploring Kanazawa's Timeless Treasures
Discover Kanazawa's beauty: Kenrokuen Garden, Kanazawa Castle, Higashi Chaya District, and Omicho Market. A day of culture and culinary delights!
Kanazawa's Warm Embrace
Today marked the beginning of our Kanazawa adventure, and what a start it was! From the serene beauty of Kenrokuen Garden, to the bustling energy of Omicho Market, Kanazawa has already captured my heart. Maximilian and I dove headfirst into the city's rich culture and vibrant atmosphere, and I can't wait to share every detail.
Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Plat Home - Kanazawa Kitchen. It was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploration. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee and the sight of local delicacies set the stage for what was to come.
Kenrokuen Garden: A Stroll Through Paradise
Our first stop was the renowned Kenrokuen Garden. As someone who appreciates sustainable living and the beauty of nature, I was eager to experience one of Japan's Three Great Gardens. The moment we stepped inside, I was transported to another world.
The garden is a masterpiece of landscape design, featuring meticulously manicured trees, serene ponds, and historic teahouses. The summer greenery was lush and vibrant, creating a tranquil oasis in the heart of the city. We wandered along the winding paths, admiring the intricate details of each carefully placed stone and plant. The air was filled with the gentle sounds of flowing water and chirping birds, creating a sense of peace and harmony.
I was particularly captivated by the Kasumigaike Pond, the largest water feature in the garden. The reflection of the surrounding trees and structures on the water's surface created a mesmerizing effect. We spent a considerable amount of time simply sitting by the pond, soaking in the beauty and tranquility.
A garden is a grand teacher. It teaches self-reliance, industry, and thrift. Save your waste, that it may nourish you hereafter. Sow, and you reap. Thus runs the calendar of the tilth. - Wendell Berry
Maximilian, with his keen eye for detail, was fascinated by the garden's intricate irrigation system, which dates back to the Edo period. He appreciated the ingenuity and craftsmanship that went into creating such a sustainable and functional design.
I couldn't help but feel a sense of connection to the past as we strolled through Kenrokuen. The garden has been cultivated for centuries, and it's a testament to the enduring beauty of nature and the artistry of human hands. I learned that Kenrokuen is holding firefly viewing evenings in early July, but unfortunately, we missed it. Also, I found out that in summer, they have free illuminations.

Kanazawa Castle Park: A Step Back in Time
Just a short walk from Kenrokuen, we found ourselves at Kanazawa Castle Park. As a history enthusiast, I was excited to explore this historic site and learn about its significance in Japanese history.
The castle, originally built in the late 16th century, served as the seat of the powerful Maeda clan for centuries. Although much of the original structure was destroyed by fire over the years, the castle has been meticulously reconstructed, offering visitors a glimpse into its former glory.
We explored the Hishi Yagura turret, the Hashizume-mon Gate and the Sanjikken Nagaya Storehouse, marveling at the intricate architectural details and the imposing stone walls. Maximilian was particularly impressed by the castle's defensive features, such as the strategically placed turrets and the deep moats that surround the complex.
As we walked through the park, I couldn't help but imagine what life must have been like during the Edo period. The castle was a symbol of power and authority, and it played a central role in the city's political and cultural life. Now I read that Kanazawa Castle Park holds nighttime illuminations every Saturday and on specific dates. It would be amazing to see the special lighting that accentuates the unique stone walls.

Omicho Market: A Culinary Adventure
After immersing ourselves in history and nature, it was time for a culinary adventure at Omicho Market. This bustling marketplace, known as Kanazawa's Kitchen, is a feast for the senses.
The market is filled with vendors selling a wide array of fresh seafood, local produce, and regional specialties. The vibrant colors, enticing aromas, and lively atmosphere created an exhilarating experience. As someone who enjoys cooking traditional Puerto Rican dishes, I was eager to discover new ingredients and flavors.
We sampled a variety of local delicacies, including fresh oysters, grilled scallops, and pickled vegetables. The seafood was incredibly fresh and flavorful, a testament to the market's proximity to the Sea of Japan. I was particularly impressed by the quality of the local produce, which was bursting with flavor and color.
Maximilian, with his adventurous palate, was eager to try everything. He even indulged in a bowl of uni (sea urchin), which he declared to be the best he's ever had. We also grabbed some A5 Wagyu skewers, and they were indeed delicious!
I found some amazing strawberries and pears at Omicho Market. I was surprised at how cheap and fresh the seafood was. It was indeed the best Sashimi bowl I have ever had!
As we strolled through the market, we couldn't help but feel a sense of connection to the local community. The vendors were friendly and passionate about their products, and they were eager to share their knowledge and expertise. It was a truly authentic cultural experience.

Kourin Sushi: A Lunch to Remember
For lunch, we decided to try Kourin Sushi, a local sushi restaurant recommended by several vendors at Omicho Market. The restaurant was small and unassuming, but the sushi was out of this world.
The chef, a master of his craft, prepared each piece with precision and care. The fish was incredibly fresh, and the rice was perfectly seasoned. It was a true culinary masterpiece.
I savored every bite, appreciating the delicate flavors and textures of the sushi. Maximilian, who is a big fan of Japanese cuisine, was equally impressed. We both agreed that it was one of the best sushi meals we've ever had.

Higashi Chaya District: A Glimpse into Geisha Culture
In the late afternoon, we ventured into the enchanting Higashi Chaya District, a well-preserved geisha district that dates back to the Edo period. As someone interested in cultural exchange and history, I was eager to explore this unique area and learn about its fascinating past.
The district is characterized by its narrow streets, traditional wooden buildings, and delicate latticework. The atmosphere is both elegant and mysterious, evoking a sense of stepping back in time.
We visited a traditional teahouse, where we learned about the history and customs of the geisha. I was fascinated by the intricate rituals and the artistry involved in this unique form of entertainment. We also visited a gold leaf shop, where we learned about the process of creating this delicate material and its significance in Japanese culture. I was surprised to learn that Ishikawa prefecture has the largest annual consumption of ice cream in Japan. I wish we had tried the gold leaf soft-serve ice cream!
As we strolled through the district, we could hear the faint sounds of music and laughter emanating from the teahouses. It was a reminder of the area's vibrant past and its enduring cultural significance. I learned that Higashi Chaya District is one of Japan's few remaining geisha districts. I read that the geisha houses have a stunning traditional appearance.

Dining Tsuzumi: A Perfect End to a Perfect Day
To cap off our first day in Kanazawa, we enjoyed a memorable dinner at Dining Tsuzumi. The restaurant, known for its innovative cuisine and elegant ambiance, was the perfect setting for a celebratory meal.
We savored a multi-course tasting menu featuring local ingredients and modern culinary techniques. Each dish was a work of art, both visually stunning and incredibly delicious. The flavors were complex and nuanced, showcasing the chef's creativity and skill.
As we savored our meal, we reflected on the incredible experiences we had throughout the day. From the serene beauty of Kenrokuen Garden to the bustling energy of Omicho Market, Kanazawa had exceeded all of our expectations.

Kanazawa has a lot of offer during summer! There is the Hokkoku Fireworks Festival, the Kanazawa Castle & Kenrokuen Garden Four Seasons Story (Firefly Viewing), and the Yuwaku Bonbori Festival Lighting Ceremony. I am happy we arrived in time for the warm season.
