A Day of Discovery in Kanazawa
Today was a delightful immersion into Kanazawa's blend of modern artistry and historical reverence. From a captivating clock that dances with water to a temple echoing with a princess's story and a gate standing as a testament to feudal power, Kanazawa revealed its many layers. Join me as I recount a day filled with wonder, reflection, and delicious local flavors.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at A_RESTAURANT. I'd heard whispers about its innovative take on local cuisine, and it didn't disappoint. Maximilian and I enjoyed a lovely meal. The restaurant itself was beautiful, with an international atmosphere. It was the perfect start to a day of exploration.

After breakfast, we headed straight for the Fountain Clock at Kanazawa Station. I had seen pictures, but nothing prepared me for the real thing. Just outside the main entrance of the station, the clock is in full view for everyone to see. It looks like a giant digital clock, with white digits on a black background. What makes the Kanazawa Station Fountain Clock so special is its unique technology used to display the digits. Instead of a screen or lighting elements, the Kanazawa Station Fountain Clock uses small jets of water. It was a mesmerizing display of technology and art, with water droplets forming numbers and kanji characters against a dark backdrop. I couldn't help but feel a sense of childlike wonder as I watched the water dance, a perfect blend of Kanazawa's modern innovation and artistic spirit. It was a great experience and quite unique. I think it's something everyone should see when they visit Kanazawa. I was so mesmerized by the dancing water, I almost forgot about the umbrella I had forgotten to pack! Good thing the sun was shining!

Kanazawa's beauty lies in its ability to seamlessly blend the artistry of the present with the echoes of its past, creating an experience that is both captivating and deeply enriching.
Next on our itinerary was Tentokuin Temple, a serene escape from the city's bustle. Dedicated to Tamahime, a princess with a love for dolls, the temple exuded a peaceful aura. As we walked through the sanmon gate, the only structure that survived a fire in 1768, I felt a sense of stepping back in time. The air was filled with the scent of incense, and the gentle rustling of leaves created a soothing ambiance. The temple displays some dolls that belonged to Tamahime. We were lucky enough to catch one of the karakuri puppet shows, which told the story of Tamahime's life. The intricate movements of the dolls and the traditional music transported me to another era, offering a glimpse into the life of a princess who lived centuries ago. I found myself reflecting on the ephemeral nature of life and the enduring power of memory.

Leaving the temple, we made our way to the Hashizume-mon Gate, a part of the historic Kanazawa Castle. This gate, recently restored, stands as a proud reminder of the city's feudal past. As we approached the gate, I couldn't help but marvel at its imposing structure and intricate design. The gate combines “Ichi-no mon” (Korai-mon style), “Masugata”(a rectangular space surrounded by stone walls and double walls) and “Ni-no mon” (watch-tower style). Hashizume mon, Ishikawa mon and Kahoku mon are called the three major gates. Imagining samurai warriors passing through those gates centuries ago, I felt a connection to the history that shaped this city. The craftsmanship was remarkable, and the sheer scale of the gate was awe-inspiring. It was a powerful symbol of Kanazawa's resilience and its commitment to preserving its heritage.

For lunch, we ventured to Itaru, a restaurant known for its fresh seafood. Luckily, since I was dining solo, I managed to get a seat without a reservation. The restaurant exterior has a nice traditional feel, with a sign that says “Sake and Heartfelt Cuisine.” The interior has a retro vibe, with both counter and table seating. I decided to try the Japan Sea Sashimi Platter. Each one is plump, fresh, and perfect in flavor and texture. As someone from Kyushu, where seafood is also excellent, I was thrilled to try these different varieties. It was a culinary journey that celebrated the bounty of the sea, and I savored every bite. The experience reminded me of the importance of connecting with local traditions and flavors, a sentiment I always carry with me during my travels.

As evening approached, we sought out the Kanazawa Music Bar for a nightcap. I had read about its impressive vinyl collection and audiophile-quality sound system. Stepping inside, I was immediately enveloped in a world of music and mellow vibes. The bartender, a friendly soul with a passion for music, crafted us some amazing cocktails while spinning classic records. The atmosphere was intimate and sophisticated, a perfect way to unwind after a day of exploring. As the music filled the air, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the experiences I had shared with Maximilian today. It was a reminder that travel is not just about seeing new places, but also about connecting with people and cultures in meaningful ways. The collection on vinyl is great, playing some old classics as well as some unknown (to me) groovy tunes. The sound system is incredible, truly giving justice to the artists. The cocktails are delicious and reasonably priced.

Dinner was at Akadama Honten, a renowned oden restaurant. The rich, simmering broth and assortment of savory ingredients were the perfect comfort food after a long day. We chose a few items, including beef stew. The meat was very tender and the spring onions on top made the taste even better!

Reflecting on the day, I realized how much Kanazawa had captivated me. Its ability to seamlessly blend the artistry of the present with the echoes of its past is truly remarkable. Tomorrow, we're planning to delve deeper into Kanazawa's cultural tapestry with a visit to the Kaga-Yuzen Kimono Center, a stroll across the Saigawa-Ōhashi Bridge, and a relaxing experience at Yamanaka Onsen. I am particularly excited about the Yamanaka Onsen, because I have heard such wonderful things about it. I'm also looking forward to visiting KANAZAWA M'ZA. I hope to find some souvenirs there! I am also looking forward to the wonderful meals we have planned for tomorrow! I am sure they will be just as delicious as today's meals!
Until then, sayōnara from Kanazawa!
