Discovering Kanazawa: A Cultural Journey in Japan
Day 3: A Day of Serenity and History in Kanazawa
Exploring Kanazawa's spiritual side at Oyama Shrine, finding peace at the D.T. Suzuki Museum, and stepping back in time at Kanazawa Castle.
Kanazawa's Cultural Heartbeat
Today was a journey into the heart of Kanazawa's cultural and historical tapestry. From serene shrines to philosophical museums and grand castles, each stop deepened my appreciation for this city's unique blend of tradition and modernity. It’s amazing how much history and tranquility can be packed into a single day!
Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Installation Table ENSO L'asymetrie du calme. It was such an inspiring way to start the day. The restaurant's name itself, with its blend of art and culinary terms, hinted at the experience to come. Installation suggesting an immersive art experience, ENSO meaning seasoning only with salt, L'asymetrie pointing to asymmetry, and Calme evoking silence. Each dish was a masterpiece, reflecting Chef Makoto Doi's passion for local ingredients and innovative techniques. I particularly enjoyed the way they introduced each ingredient with beautiful illustrations, a testament to their dedication to local producers and artisans. Maximilian and I savored every moment, discussing the intricate flavors and artistic presentation. It was the perfect start to a day filled with cultural exploration.

Our first stop was Oyama Shrine. As we approached, the unique Shinmon gate immediately caught my eye. It’s such an unusual blend of Japanese, Chinese, and European architectural styles! I learned that it was designed with the help of a Dutch architect and even served as a lighthouse at one point. The mix of cultures was fascinating, and it really spoke to Kanazawa’s open-mindedness throughout history. The shrine itself is dedicated to Maeda Toshiie, the first lord of the Kaga Domain, and his wife, Omatsu. I found it particularly touching that Omatsu was known for her intelligence and diplomatic skills – a woman of substance in a time when that wasn't always valued. We strolled through the garden, admiring the pond shaped like a Japanese lute and the statue of Omatsu. It was a peaceful place, and I could feel the history all around us.

Next, we visited the D.T. Suzuki Museum, dedicated to the life and works of Daisetz Teitaro Suzuki, a renowned Buddhist philosopher who played a significant role in popularizing Zen Buddhism in the West. As someone deeply interested in cultural exchange and philosophy, I was eager to learn more about his teachings. The museum, designed by architect Yoshio Taniguchi, was a masterpiece of minimalist architecture. The clean lines, open spaces, and serene gardens created an atmosphere of contemplation. I was particularly moved by the Water Mirror Garden, a reflective pond that invited introspection and quiet meditation. I spent a long time there, simply sitting and reflecting on Suzuki's philosophy and its relevance to my own life. His writings and translations made Eastern philosophical texts accessible to Western audiences, a contribution I deeply admire. It was a truly enriching experience, reminding me of the importance of finding inner peace and mindfulness in our busy lives.

For lunch, we indulged in a Teppanyaki experience at Teppanyaki makibi san-an. The aromas of Wagyu beef grilling over the iron plate filled the air as we entered, instantly making my mouth water. We opted for a lunch course featuring Noto beef, raised in the rich environment of the region, and fresh seafood directly from Kanazawa Port. The chef's skillful knife work and the use of firewood grilling added a unique depth of flavor to the ingredients. Maximilian, ever the wine enthusiast, was delighted by the sommelier's selection of wines that perfectly complemented our meal. It was more than just a lunch; it was a culinary performance, showcasing the best of Kanazawa's local produce.

In the afternoon, we made our way to Kanazawa Castle. This partially restored castle was once the headquarters of the powerful Maeda clan. The castle has been through several fires and reconstructions over the centuries. The scale of the castle was impressive, and I was fascinated by the intricate details of the Ishikawa Gate and the Sanjikken Nagaya samurai warehouse. We explored the Hishi Yagura turret, Gojikken Nagaya warehouse, and Hashizume-mon Tsuzuki Yagura turret, admiring the traditional construction methods used in their restoration. As we wandered through the grounds, I imagined what life must have been like during the Edo period, with samurai and lords walking these same paths. The castle is built on the highest ground between the Sai and Asano rivers, surrounded by a system of moats and canals for extra protection, which really gives you a sense of its strategic importance.

Before dinner, we stopped by Hands Kanazawa Store to do some shopping. I was looking for a few special mementos to bring back home. This store is a treasure trove of unique gifts, home goods, and Japanese crafts. I found some beautiful stationery and a few quirky gifts for my friends back in Heidelberg. The store also promotes local artisans, so I felt good about supporting the community while finding unique souvenirs. It’s the perfect place to find something that truly captures the essence of Kanazawa.

As the day drew to a close, I reflected on all that we had experienced. Kanazawa had truly captured my heart with its blend of history, culture, and natural beauty. Each location we visited today offered a unique glimpse into the city’s soul, from the spiritual serenity of Oyama Shrine to the philosophical depths of the D.T. Suzuki Museum and the historical grandeur of Kanazawa Castle. And, of course, the incredible food we enjoyed throughout the day was an experience in itself!
Tomorrow, we're venturing further afield to Shirakawa-go and the World Heritage Suganuma Gassho-zukuri Village. I’m excited to see these traditional villages and experience a different side of Japan. I've heard so much about the unique gassho-style farmhouses, and I can't wait to explore the picturesque landscapes. I'm also looking forward to trying some local cuisine in Shirakawa-go. We plan to have breakfast at Aashirwad, lunch at Tawara Restaurant, and dinner at Teppanyaki 'Icho'. I'm sure it will be another day filled with unforgettable experiences! Travel is more than seeing of sights; it is a change that goes on, deep and permanent, in the ideas of living.
