Stepping Back in Time
Today was a day of diving deep into Morocco's rich past and savoring its vibrant present. Leaving the serene landscapes of Moulay Idriss for a day trip, I ventured into the historical heart of the region, exploring ancient ruins and indulging in the local cuisine. It was a journey filled with architectural marvels, culinary discoveries, and moments of quiet reflection amidst the echoes of history.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at Cafe restaurant ain zwawk. The warm hospitality and traditional Moroccan fare set the perfect tone for the adventures ahead. I savored a tagine, its rich flavors a delightful start to the day. The cafe itself was charming, with an inviting atmosphere that made me feel right at home. It's amazing how a simple meal can be so fulfilling, especially when enjoyed in such a welcoming setting.

After breakfast, I set off to explore Heri es-Souani and Bassin Souani, both located near Meknes. The drive itself was scenic, with rolling hills and picturesque landscapes that showcased the beauty of the Moroccan countryside. As someone who grew up in the vibrant landscapes of Puerto Rico, I always appreciate the beauty of nature, and Morocco certainly didn't disappoint.
Arriving at Heri es-Souani, I was immediately struck by the sheer scale of the structure. Built in the 17th century by Sultan Moulay Ismail, this ancient granary and royal storehouse is a testament to the architectural brilliance of the era. The massive, thick stone walls and beautifully crafted arches spoke of a time long past, and as I wandered through the vast halls, I could almost hear the echoes of history. It's incredible to think that this place once held vast quantities of grain for the sultan's army and the local population.

The past is never dead. It's not even past.
The granaries were designed to stay cool with a system of underfloor water channels, which drew water from a cistern below. Outside, I saw the remains of stables that once housed around 12,000 horses. While I'm not particularly interested in water engineering, the sheer scale of the complex was impressive. It was easy to imagine the bustling activity that once filled this space. It’s fascinating to see how such structures were integral to the functioning of the society back then.
Adjacent to Heri es-Souani lies the Bassin Souani, an enormous stone-lined lake built in the 18th century. Also known as the Agdal Basin, it served as a reservoir for Moulay Ismail's palace. Measuring approximately 148.75 by 319 meters, with an average depth of 1.2 meters, the basin is an impressive feat of engineering. Although it was primarily utilitarian, I learned that the basin was also used for leisure, with palace residents bathing here and wandering around on small boats. I could picture the scene, the water shimmering in the sunlight, the air filled with laughter and music.

After immersing myself in history, it was time for lunch. I headed to the Roman City restaurant, enticed by its promise of Mediterranean and Moroccan cuisine. The restaurant lived up to its reputation, offering a delightful array of dishes that showcased the local flavors. I savored a vegetable tagine, its fragrant spices and fresh ingredients a true delight. The fancy decor and enjoyable atmosphere added to the experience, making it a meal to remember. It was a perfect spot to relax and recharge before continuing my exploration.

In the late afternoon, I returned to Moulay Idriss and decided to unwind at DAR INES MOULAY IDRISS ZERHOUN. Although listed as a bar, it felt more like a cozy guesthouse, a portal into the enchanting world of Moroccan culture and history. The beautifully designed interiors reflected the region's rich heritage, blending traditional architecture with modern comforts. I sat on the sun terrace, sipping mint tea and enjoying the stunning views of the town. It was a moment of pure bliss, a chance to reflect on the day's adventures and soak in the tranquility of the surroundings.

For dinner, I chose Al Andaloussiya Diyafa, a restaurant known for its traditional Moroccan dishes and warm, inviting ambiance. Located in Moulay Idriss Zerhoun, this hidden gem is renowned for its aromatic tagines, fluffy couscous, and rich, flavorful stews. I opted for the lamb tagine, a local favorite that showcased the rich flavors of Moroccan spices. The restaurant's dedication to quality and authenticity was evident in every bite, and I left with a satisfied palate and lasting memories of Moroccan hospitality.

As the day drew to a close, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the experiences I had. From the ancient ruins of Heri es-Souani and Bassin Souani to the culinary delights of Roman City and Al Andaloussiya Diyafa, today was a true celebration of Moroccan culture and history. It was a day of discovery, a day of immersion, and a day that I will cherish for years to come.
Tomorrow marks the last day of my solo journey in the Moulay Idriss Region. I plan to visit the Khemis Gate and the Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail in Meknes. I also hope to do some souvenir shopping at قيسارية مولاي ادريس. It’s going to be a bittersweet day, as I prepare to say goodbye to this enchanting place. But for now, I'm content to savor the memories of today and look forward to one last adventure in Morocco.
And as I reflect on my experiences, I realize that travel is not just about seeing new places, but about connecting with different cultures and discovering new aspects of myself. It's about embracing the unknown, stepping outside my comfort zone, and opening my heart to the world. And in that sense, this solo journey to Morocco has been a resounding success.
Until tomorrow,
Valentina
