A Day of Contrasts in Urbino

Today, our last full day in Urbino, was a fascinating blend of natural beauty and eerie history. Maximilian and I embarked on a journey that took us from the serene landscapes of a regional park to the chilling depths of a church filled with mummified remains. It was a day that challenged our senses and left us reflecting on life, death, and the stories that linger in the air of this historic region.

Our morning began with a hearty breakfast at Il Grottino, a charming spot known for its traditional Urbino cuisine. I enjoyed a simple yet satisfying breakfast of fresh bread, local cheese, and strong Italian coffee, while Maximilian opted for a more substantial meal of eggs and prosciutto. Energized, we set off for our first destination: Parco Naturale Regionale Gola della Rossa e di Frasassi.

The drive to the park was a scenic delight. As we wound through the rolling hills of the Marche region, the landscape transformed into a tapestry of green fields, vineyards, and distant mountains. The air was crisp and clean, carrying the scent of wildflowers and freshly tilled earth. It was a far cry from the bustling streets of Heidelberg, and I felt a sense of peace wash over me.

Arriving at Parco Naturale Regionale Gola della Rossa e di Frasassi, we were immediately struck by its vastness and natural beauty. Spanning over 10,000 hectares, the park is the largest protected area in the Marche region, boasting a rich biodiversity of flora and fauna. As we started our hike, the sounds of the city faded away, replaced by the gentle rustling of leaves, the chirping of birds, and the distant murmur of a flowing river.

We chose a trail that led us through a dense forest, sunlight filtering through the canopy in dappled patterns. Maximilian, ever the data scientist, was fascinated by the diverse ecosystem, pointing out various species of trees, plants, and insects. I, on the other hand, was captivated by the sheer tranquility of the surroundings. It was a welcome escape from the digital world, a chance to reconnect with nature and appreciate the simple beauty of life.

We learned that the park is home to over 105 species of birds, 40 species of mammals, and 29 species of reptiles and amphibians. Though we didn't spot any eagles, we did see several smaller birds flitting through the trees, their songs filling the air with melody. Maximilian was particularly excited when he identified a wild cat, though it quickly disappeared into the underbrush before I could get a good look.

As we hiked deeper into the park, we came across several caves and grottoes, remnants of the region's geological past. The most famous of these is the Grotte di Frasassi, a stunning cave system known for its impressive stalactites and stalagmites. Unfortunately, we didn't have time to explore the caves on this trip, but it's definitely on our list for a future visit. I made a mental note to bring a portable phone charger next time, since I forgot mine and my phone was already running low on battery.

After a few hours of hiking, we found a secluded spot by a stream to enjoy a picnic lunch. We had packed some local bread, cheese, and fruit from a nearby market, a simple yet satisfying meal that tasted even better amidst the beauty of nature. As we ate, we reflected on the importance of preserving these natural spaces for future generations. It's easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of modern life, but it's essential to take time to appreciate the world around us and to protect its fragile ecosystems.

To truly appreciate the beauty of life, one must embrace both its light and its shadows.

In the afternoon, our journey took a decidedly different turn as we headed to Urbania to visit the Chiesa dei Morti, or Church of the Dead. This small church houses a collection of mummified bodies, a macabre reminder of the town's history and traditions. I had read about it before the trip and was intrigued, though I must admit I approached it with a sense of trepidation.

Urbania, formerly known as Casteldurante, is a charming town located in the Pesaro and Urbino province of the Marche region. As we walked through its narrow streets, I couldn't help but notice its well-preserved architecture and rich cultural heritage. The town is known for its ceramics and majolicas, a testament to its artistic traditions. It’s interesting to imagine the town’s evolution from its days as Casteldurante to the present day.

The Chiesa dei Morti is a small, unassuming church located just a short walk from the town center. As we stepped inside, we were greeted by an eerie silence, broken only by the occasional whisper of other visitors. The air was cool and damp, carrying a faint scent of dust and decay.

The mummified bodies are displayed in glass cases behind the altar, each one a silent testament to a life lived and lost. According to what we learned, the bodies were mummified naturally due to a particular mold in the soil, a phenomenon that has fascinated scientists and historians for centuries. The local Brotherhood of the Good Death was established in 1567 to provide proper burial services to the poor, and they carefully documented the lives and deaths of those they interred.

As I gazed upon the mummies, I couldn't help but feel a sense of sadness and respect. Each body had a story to tell, a life cut short by disease, violence, or misfortune. There was a mother who died in childbirth, a young man who was stabbed, and a hanged man, each one a victim of their time.

Maximilian, ever the pragmatist, was more interested in the scientific aspects of the mummification process. He peppered the guide with questions about the soil composition, the preservation techniques, and the historical context of the burials. I, on the other hand, was more drawn to the human stories behind the mummies, the lives and struggles of these long-forgotten souls.

One particular mummy caught my eye: a woman with a cross marked on her womb, believed to have died in childbirth. As a woman, I felt a deep connection to her, a shared understanding of the joys and risks of motherhood. It was a poignant reminder of the sacrifices that women have made throughout history, the pain and suffering they have endured to bring new life into the world.

The Church of the Dead is not for the faint of heart, but it's a unique and thought-provoking experience that offers a glimpse into the past. It's a reminder that death is a natural part of life, and that even in death, there is a story to be told.

After our visit to the Chiesa dei Morti, we needed something a little lighter, so we stopped by Star Shop Urbino. It was a fun place to browse, filled with comics and accessories. I even picked up a small Wonder Woman figurine for my desk back in Heidelberg. It's always nice to have a little reminder of our travels to brighten up the workday.

For dinner, we decided to try La Casa Del Pane, a local spot known for its traditional cuisine. We shared a plate of handmade pasta with truffle sauce, a rich and flavorful dish that was the perfect ending to a long day. As we savored each bite, we reflected on the contrasts of the day, from the beauty of nature to the stark reality of death. It was a day that challenged our senses and left us with a deeper appreciation for life.

As our trip to Urbino comes to a close, I can't help but feel a sense of sadness. This hidden gem of Italy has captured my heart with its rich history, stunning architecture, and warm, welcoming people. I will miss the rolling hills, the ancient streets, and the delicious food. But most of all, I will miss the sense of peace and tranquility that I found here, a welcome escape from the stresses of modern life.

Tomorrow, we will be heading back to Germany, carrying with us memories that will last a lifetime. I'm already looking forward to sharing our experiences with friends and family, and to planning our next adventure. But for now, I will savor the last few hours of our trip, cherishing the moments we have shared and the beauty we have discovered together. I am so glad I got to experience this with Maximilian.

Before heading back to our accommodation, we grabbed some gelato and took a leisurely stroll through the town square, soaking in the atmosphere and enjoying the warm evening air. Urbino by night is just as magical as Urbino by day, with its ancient buildings illuminated by soft, golden light.

As we prepare to leave Urbino, I can't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to have experienced this hidden gem of Italy. It's a place that has touched my heart and soul, and I know I will carry its memories with me for years to come. Until next time, Urbino, arrivederci!

I am going to miss Italy so much, but I am also looking forward to going home to my life in Germany. It is always good to come home after a long trip.
