Nature's Embrace: Discovering Cazorla's Hidden Gems
Today was a day of embracing the wild side of Cazorla Natural Park. We ventured into the heart of the park, seeking out unique experiences that would connect us with the natural beauty and local culture of this stunning region. From observing the local wildlife to chasing waterfalls, every moment was filled with awe and wonder. It's days like these that remind me why I love traveling with my family – sharing these incredible experiences and creating lasting memories together.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Pizza Lara in Cazorla. Despite the name suggesting Italian fare, we found it to be a local gem offering a variety of breakfast options. It was the perfect way to fuel up for the adventures that lay ahead. Kai was particularly excited, having heard whispers of the wildlife park we were about to visit. Lena, ever the planner, ensured we had our reusable water bottles filled and our hiking boots laced up tight.
Our first stop was Parque Cinegético Collado del Almendral, a wildlife park dedicated to preserving the fauna of the Sierra de Cazorla. The park is sprawling, encompassing 100 hectares in the heart of the natural park. We opted for the guided tour on the tourist train, which took us on a 5 km journey through the park. It was fascinating to see deer, fallow deer, mouflons, and mountain goats roaming freely in their natural habitat. The guide shared insights into the unique characteristics of each species, making it an educational experience for all of us. I was particularly impressed by the reintroduction program for the Iberian roe deer, a species unique to this region.

The best view comes after the hardest climb.
After the train tour, we embarked on a 3 km hike to the miradors, or viewpoints. The first, Mirador del Castillo de Bujaraiza, offered a stunning view of the recently reintroduced Iberian roe deer. The second, Mirador de las Ánimas, provided panoramic views of the Tranco Reservoir. Here, we were treated to a demonstration of majestic birds of prey in flight, with experts detailing the characteristics of each species. I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe as we watched these magnificent creatures soar through the sky.
Lena, always keen to learn more about local history, pointed out that some historians believe Cazorla to be the village of Castaon, founded in 550 B.C. She also shared that during Roman times it was called Carcacena and was known for its silver mines. It's amazing to think about the rich history embedded in this land.
Next, we were off to Cascada de la Osera, a waterfall nestled within the park. The drive itself was breathtaking, with winding roads offering glimpses of the stunning landscapes. We parked the car and began our hike to the falls. The trail was a bit challenging, but the sound of rushing water kept us motivated. As we rounded the final bend, the waterfall came into view – a cascade of crystal-clear water tumbling down moss-covered rocks. It was a sight to behold!

We spent a good hour at the waterfall, taking photos and simply enjoying the tranquility of the surroundings. Kai, ever the adventurous one, even dipped his toes in the cool water. Lena, armed with her knowledge of local flora, identified various plant species along the trail. I felt a sense of peace wash over me as I listened to the soothing sounds of nature.
After our waterfall adventure, hunger beckoned. We drove to Taberna Quinito in Cazorla for lunch. This place was buzzing with locals, a sure sign of good food. We managed to snag a table outside under the shade of plane trees. The atmosphere was lively and welcoming. We ordered a selection of tapas, including local specialties like lomo a la orza (pork loin in olive oil) and berenjenas rebozadas (battered eggplant). The food was delicious and reasonably priced, a true taste of Andalusia. The staff were friendly and attentive, making our dining experience even more enjoyable.

We sat on the terrace, enjoying the warm afternoon sun and sipping on local wine. With each drink, we were served a complimentary tapa – a delightful surprise! I even struck up a conversation with a local, who shared stories about the history and traditions of Cazorla.
