Solo Exploration: Marsabit National Park Adventure
Day 4: Embracing the Wild Heart of Marsabit: A Day of Discovery
Exploring Marsabit National Park: From wildlife encounters at Ahmed Gate to local flavors, an immersive Kenyan adventure unfolds.
A Day in the Wild
Today was a day of immersing myself in the raw beauty and vibrant culture that defines Marsabit. From the moment I woke up in my tent, the crisp morning air filled with the promise of adventure, I knew it would be a day etched in my memory. I set out to explore the famed Marsabit National Park, a verdant oasis rising from the arid landscapes of northern Kenya.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at Cafe Kigwa - Safari Park Hotel back in Nairobi, a place recommended for its blend of international cuisine. I enjoyed a buffet with a Korean corner, which reminded me of the diverse culinary scene back in Berlin. Fuelled and ready, I caught my connecting flight to Marsabit, eager to delve into the heart of this unique landscape. The journey itself offered a stark contrast to the bustling city, as the terrain transformed into a semi-desert expanse dotted with nomadic settlements. It was a reminder of the diverse ecosystems coexisting within Kenya.
Upon landing in Marsabit, I arranged for transport to the national park. The drive was an experience in itself, the rugged road winding through a landscape that slowly transitioned from arid scrubland to a dense montane forest as we gained altitude. The air grew cooler, and the scent of pine filled my nostrils—a welcome change from the dust and heat of the lower plains. The park, established in 1949, felt like stepping into another world, a sanctuary for wildlife in a region defined by its harsh environment.
My first stop was WILD TOUR MARSABIT, where I hoped to learn more about the park's ecosystem and its inhabitants. I was eager to spot some of the unique wildlife that call this place home, like the Grevy's zebra, reticulated giraffe, and the majestic greater kudu. I wasn't disappointed. Within minutes of entering the park, I encountered a small herd of elephants, their massive forms moving silently through the undergrowth. It was a humbling experience to witness these gentle giants in their natural habitat, a stark reminder of the importance of conservation efforts.

The Earth has music for those who listen.
Next, I made my way to KWS Ahmed Gate, the park's main entrance, named after the legendary elephant Ahmed. Ahmed, I learned, was a bull elephant known for his enormous tusks, so impressive that President Jomo Kenyatta declared him a national treasure, providing him with 24-hour protection. It's a testament to Kenya's commitment to preserving its natural heritage. Standing at the gate, I imagined Ahmed roaming these very grounds, his massive tusks glinting in the sun.

The gate itself was abuzz with activity. Rangers were diligently checking permits, and local guides offered their services, eager to share their knowledge of the park. I opted for a guided tour, keen to learn more about the park's hidden gems. My guide, a local Samburu man named Lekato, proved to be a wealth of information, sharing stories of the park's history, its wildlife, and the challenges of conservation in the region.
Lekato led me to a vantage point overlooking one of the park's crater lakes. The view was breathtaking. A shimmering expanse of water nestled within the caldera of an extinct volcano, surrounded by lush vegetation. Birdlife abounded, with colorful species flitting through the trees and soaring overhead. Lekato pointed out various species, from the African fish eagle to the vibrant sunbird, each with its unique call and plumage. Marsabit National Park is a haven for birdwatchers, boasting over 500 recorded species.
As the day wore on, I made a stop at Basmart Supermarket to pick up some supplies. It was a great opportunity to immerse myself in the local culture, browsing the aisles alongside residents and fellow travelers. I picked up some local snacks and ingredients, eager to try my hand at some Kenyan cooking back at the campsite. The supermarket was more than just a place to shop; it was a reflection of the local community.

For lunch, I ventured to Big Five Restaurant, drawn by its reputation for showcasing Kenya's rich culinary traditions. I savored a meal featuring local ingredients, each bite a burst of flavor that reflected the region's diverse ecosystems. The restaurant provided a welcome respite from the day's adventures, a chance to recharge and reflect on the beauty I had witnessed.

As evening approached, I found myself at Ranch House Bistro for dinner, a charming restaurant known for its authentic Kenyan cuisine. The ambiance was warm and inviting, the rustic decor complementing the natural surroundings. I indulged in a hearty meal of grilled meats and flavorful vegetarian dishes, each plate a testament to the chef's skill and creativity.

Reflecting on the day, I realized that Marsabit National Park is more than just a wildlife sanctuary; it's a cultural landscape, shaped by the interactions of people and nature over centuries. The local Samburu community has a deep connection to this land, their traditions and livelihoods intertwined with the park's resources. Sustainable tourism initiatives are crucial to ensuring that this relationship remains harmonious, providing economic opportunities for the community while preserving the park's ecological integrity.
Tomorrow, I plan to visit Goff Chopa and the Site of the 1998 Helicopter Crash, continuing my exploration of Marsabit's unique landscape and history. I'm also hoping to experience the local nightlife at Da,Roots, a popular bar in town. Each day here brings new discoveries, new perspectives, and a deeper appreciation for the beauty and resilience of this remarkable region.
As I prepare for another night under the stars, I am filled with a sense of gratitude for this incredible journey. Marsabit has captured my heart, its wild landscapes and warm people leaving an indelible mark on my soul. I look forward to sharing more of my adventures with you, as I continue to explore the hidden gems of this enchanting corner of Kenya.
The stars are particularly bright here, and the sounds of the African night—distant animal calls and the rustling of leaves—lull me into a peaceful sleep. I drift off, dreaming of elephants, crater lakes, and the warm smiles of the Samburu people. This is Africa, and it is truly unforgettable.
Tonight, as I sit by the campfire, the crackling flames mirroring the stars above, I am reminded of a Hawaiian proverb my grandmother used to say:
“He lei poina ʻole ke keiki.”
“A child is a lei never to be forgotten.”
It speaks of the enduring impact of experiences, the way they shape our lives and stay with us forever. This journey to Marsabit, I know, will be one such lei, a cherished memory that I will carry with me always. The beauty of the landscape, the warmth of the people, and the lessons learned will continue to resonate long after I leave this special place.
