Cultural Immersion in Kyoto: A Family Adventure
Day 8: A Day of Temples, Parks, and Anime Treasures in Kyoto
Explore Kyoto's serene temples, vibrant parks, and unique anime goods in a day filled with cultural and delightful discoveries.
Kyoto's Blend of Serenity and Pop Culture
Today was a day of contrasts, blending the serene beauty of Kyoto's temples and parks with a fun dive into its more modern, pop-cultural side. It's amazing how this city manages to hold onto its ancient traditions while still embracing new and exciting trends. Liam and Maya were especially thrilled with today’s itinerary, and honestly, so was I!
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Nishikawa. The restaurant offered a refined taste of Japanese cuisine. I was very impressed by the innovative dishes, which showcased the seasonal ingredients in a unique way. Liam really enjoyed the lively atmosphere at the counter, where we could watch the chef, Mr. Nishikawa, at work. Maya was very happy with the salted plums she got as a gift at the end of the meal, which she said she will bring to school to show her friends. It was the perfect start to a day of exploration and discovery.
Every corner of Kyoto holds a story, a memory, and a unique blend of the old and the new, waiting to be discovered.
Our first stop was Tōfuku-ji Temple. As we approached, the sheer size of the Sanmon Gate was breathtaking; I learned it's the oldest Zen gate of its kind in Japan. The crisp winter air added to the sense of tranquility as we wandered the spacious grounds. Even though it's not the fall foliage season, the temple was still beautiful and relatively peaceful. We explored the Hojo Garden, each side presenting a different world, a truly Zen experience. Maya was fascinated by the intricate rock arrangements and the moss gardens. I was glad we made the stop, as it was not overly crowded, giving us a chance to soak in the atmosphere.

Next on our list was Chionin Temple. Just a short distance from Maruyama Park, the temple greeted us with its massive Sanmon Gate, an imposing wooden structure that Liam immediately recognized from the movie *The Last Samurai*. The temple grounds were expansive, and the main buildings exuded a sense of history and grandeur. As we walked through the open area, connecting the main halls, I couldn't help but feel a sense of peace wash over me. Maya was intrigued by the story of Honen, the founder of the Jodo sect, who spent his final years here. It was a perfect opportunity to share a bit about Buddhist history with her.

After the temple visits, we strolled through Maruyama Park. Even in January, the park had a serene charm. I can only imagine how stunning it must be during cherry blossom season! We took a leisurely walk, enjoying the open space and the quiet atmosphere. Although the famous weeping cherry tree wasn't in bloom, its bare branches had a stark beauty against the winter sky. We found a cozy spot to sit and enjoy a snack, watching as locals and tourists alike strolled through the park. I made a mental note to return in March or April to witness the park in its full, floral glory.

For lunch, we ventured to Saishuan Shiraki. The charming izakaya offered a wonderful experience. The owner made us feel right at home, and the food was incredible. I tried the vegan options. Liam and Maya really enjoyed the non-vegan dishes as well. The intimate setting and authentic Kyoto-style cooking made it a memorable meal.

The afternoon took a turn towards modern Japan as we headed to Kyoto Station. Our destination: the ASTY Kyoto Kyoani Goods Store. Maya, a huge anime fan, was ecstatic! The store was filled with original goods from Kyoto Animation's series, from *MUNTO* to *Sound! Euphonium*. She spent a happy hour browsing the shelves, finally settling on a few *Violet Evergarden* items. Even I was impressed by the artistry and detail of the merchandise. It was a fun, lighthearted contrast to the day's earlier, more solemn visits.

Before dinner, we had a bit of downtime at our guesthouse, Matsui Bekkan Hanakanzashi. I took the opportunity to catch up on some work while Liam and Maya played a board game. The blend of modern amenities and traditional Japanese hospitality made it the perfect place to relax and recharge.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to Teppan Tavern Tenamonya for dinner. This teppanyaki restaurant is run by a husband and wife team, and their warmth and hospitality were evident from the moment we walked in. The food was delicious, and it was fun watching Hideki cook on the teppan. Naoko took great care of us, making sure we had everything we needed. Liam raved about the wagyu steak, while Maya loved the okonomiyaki. It was a perfect end to a day filled with diverse experiences.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore Nanzen-ji Temple and Eikandō Temple. I'm looking forward to more serene landscapes and historical insights. We might even check out Bar K6 for a nightcap, depending on how tired we are from another day of adventures. I am also contemplating going to the Gion district. But honestly, I am a bit concerned about finding child friendly activities there. We shall see what tomorrow brings!
As I reflect on today, I’m reminded of how travel enriches our lives, opening our eyes to new perspectives and creating lasting memories. Kyoto, with its blend of tradition and modernity, continues to surprise and delight us at every turn. It's a city that nourishes the soul and stimulates the senses, leaving me eager for what tomorrow will bring.
I am also happy to report that I managed to find a portable charger today, so hopefully I won’t have any more issues with my phone running out of battery. I still haven’t found an umbrella though, so I will have to be extra careful to check the weather forecast every day!
