Discover the historical charm of Taroudant, Morocco, exploring ancient gates, vibrant markets, and artistic treasures in a single day.
First Impressions of the 'Little Marrakech'
The first day of our family adventure in Taroudant, Morocco, unfolded like a vibrant tapestry, rich with history, culture, and the warmth of the Moroccan people. Leaving Kelowna behind, with its familiar landscapes and routines, felt like stepping through a portal into another world. The journey itself, flying into Marrakech and then taking a private transfer to Taroudant, was smooth, allowing us to arrive refreshed and eager to explore. Although I realized I had forgotten my sunglasses, I was too excited to let it bother me!
Our accommodation, a traditional guesthouse, immediately immersed us in the local atmosphere. The scent of spices, the intricate tilework, and the friendly faces of our hosts made us feel instantly welcome. Maya, especially, was captivated by the colorful cushions and the tinkling fountain in the courtyard. Liam, ever the pragmatist, was already discussing the local infrastructure with our host, while I was mentally preparing myself to fully embrace this new cultural experience.
Our day began with a traditional Moroccan breakfast at Taroudant's Gardens. The fresh orange juice, still warm bread, and flavorful olives were a delightful introduction to the local cuisine. Energized and ready, we set out to explore the ancient city, starting with one of its most iconic landmarks: Bab Tarɣunt. This gate, one of the main entrances to the city, stood as a majestic reminder of Taroudant's rich history. Its imposing structure and intricate details were a testament to the craftsmanship of a bygone era. As we walked through the gate, I couldn't help but imagine the countless caravans and travelers who had passed through it over the centuries. The walls themselves, according to some historians, are among the oldest and most robust in Morocco.

Exploring Bab Tarɣunt offered a tangible connection to the past. Maya was fascinated by the sheer size of the gate, running her small hands along the ancient stones. Liam, with his keen interest in history, pointed out the architectural details and explained the gate's strategic importance in defending the city. For me, it was a moment of reflection, appreciating the enduring legacy of this remarkable place.
Next on our itinerary was the Musée Plein Air Claudio Bravo. This open-air museum, dedicated to the works of the Chilean hyperrealist painter Claudio Bravo, was a surprising and delightful discovery. Nestled amidst the natural beauty of Taroudant, the museum showcased Bravo's unique artistic vision and his deep connection to Moroccan culture.

As we wandered through the museum's grounds, we were struck by the harmonious blend of art and nature. Bravo's sculptures and installations were thoughtfully placed, creating a sense of wonder and discovery. The vibrant colors and surreal forms of his art stood in striking contrast to the earthy tones of the surrounding landscape. It was evident that Bravo had not only been inspired by Morocco but had also sought to celebrate its beauty through his art.
Maya was particularly captivated by the whimsical sculptures, while Liam appreciated the technical skill and artistic vision evident in Bravo's work. For me, the museum was a reminder of the power of art to transcend cultural boundaries and to connect us to something larger than ourselves.
Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.
After immersing ourselves in art and history, it was time for lunch. We stopped at Café Restaurant Roma, a local eatery known for its traditional Moroccan dishes. The tagine, a slow-cooked stew of meat and vegetables, was a culinary masterpiece, bursting with flavor and aroma. The couscous, light and fluffy, was the perfect accompaniment. As we savored each bite, we felt a sense of contentment and gratitude for the simple pleasures of life.

The afternoon was dedicated to exploring the Grande marché de l'artisanat, a bustling marketplace where local artisans showcased their wares. The market was a feast for the senses, with its vibrant colors, exotic scents, and the lively chatter of vendors and shoppers. We wandered through the labyrinthine alleys, marveling at the intricate carpets, handcrafted jewelry, and the array of leather goods. The Grande marché de l'artisanat was definitely a cultural treasure.

I was particularly drawn to the Berber jewelry, with its bold designs and intricate details. Liam, always on the lookout for a good bargain, haggled with the vendors, while Maya was fascinated by the colorful displays of spices and sweets. We purchased a few souvenirs, carefully chosen to remind us of our time in Taroudant. I found a beautiful silver bracelet, a reminder of the intricate craftsmanship of the local artisans.
As the sun began to set, we made our way to Complexe El Kasbah for dinner. This restaurant, located in a traditional kasbah, offered a magical setting for our final meal of the day. The ambiance was enchanting, with its candlelit tables, traditional music, and the gentle breeze rustling through the palm trees.

The food was equally impressive, with a menu that featured a range of Moroccan specialties. We shared a selection of appetizers, including flavorful salads and savory pastries. For our main courses, we opted for grilled meats and seafood, cooked to perfection and served with a variety of side dishes. As we dined, we reflected on the day's adventures and shared our favorite moments. Maya recounted her fascination with the sculptures at the Musée Plein Air Claudio Bravo, while Liam spoke of his appreciation for the historical significance of Bab Tarɣunt. For me, the day had been a reminder of the beauty and diversity of Moroccan culture.
As we walked back to our guesthouse, under the starlit sky, we felt a sense of gratitude for the experiences we had shared. Taroudant had welcomed us with open arms, offering a glimpse into its rich history, vibrant culture, and the warmth of its people. It was a day we would cherish forever.
Tomorrow, we plan to delve deeper into Taroudant's cultural heart. Our itinerary includes visits to Dar al-Dabbagh, the tanneries, where we'll witness the traditional methods of leather production, and the 20 August Place, a central square known for its lively atmosphere. We also plan to explore Aladdin Treasure, a shop known for its unique collection of local crafts. I’m particularly looking forward to Dar Zitoune for dinner, hoping to sample some authentic Roudani dishes. And of course, we'll be starting our day with breakfast at Café-Restaurant Bab El Kasbah, ready to embrace another day of discovery in this enchanting city.
Even though it’s only the first day, I already feel a deep connection to this place. The blend of history, art, and culture is intoxicating, and I can’t wait to see what tomorrow brings. I did hear about the Regional Goat Exhibition in Chefchaouen, but Taroudant has my heart for now.
