Day 1: Riding the Naruto Whirlpools & Embracing Shikoku's Spirit
Our journey through Shikoku has officially begun, and what a start it has been! Today was all about diving headfirst into the island's natural wonders and soaking up its unique atmosphere. From witnessing the awe-inspiring Naruto Whirlpools to savoring the local cuisine, every moment felt like a step deeper into the heart of Japan. The anticipation that had been building up for months finally burst forth in a day filled with unforgettable sights and experiences.

The day started early with breakfast at Ombelico. While technically a pizzeria and trattoria, it fueled our adventures with a hearty start. I opted for a traditional Japanese breakfast set, while Liam enjoyed a more familiar Western-style meal. Maya, ever the adventurous eater, surprised us by devouring a mini pizza! It was a great way to prepare for the day ahead.

Our main event was, of course, the Naruto Whirlpools. We decided to experience them from the Tokushima Prefectural Uzu-no-Michi Walkway, a glass-floored corridor suspended beneath the Onaruto Bridge. Walking along the Uzu-no-Michi Walkway was an experience. Looking down through the glass panels, 45 meters above the swirling waters, was both exhilarating and slightly terrifying. The power of nature was on full display as we watched the whirlpools form and dissipate in a matter of seconds. Maya was mesmerized, pointing and gasping at the swirling patterns beneath our feet. Liam, ever the engineer, was fascinated by the physics of it all, explaining to Maya how the tides and the unique underwater geography create this phenomenon.

The earth has music for those who listen.
After our thrilling walk, we explored the surrounding Naruto Park, taking in the panoramic views of the Naruto Strait and the Onaruto Bridge. The park itself is lovely, with walking trails and viewpoints offering different perspectives of the natural spectacle. We spent some time at the Senjojiki Observatory, another vantage point that provided stunning views.
Lunch took us to Restaurant Obokekyo Mannaka, nestled in the scenic Oboke Gorge. The views were breathtaking, and the food was delicious! I tried the Iya Soba, a local specialty, while Liam opted for a seafood dish. Maya, predictably, chose the kids' meal, but even she couldn't resist sampling our dishes. The restaurant had a warm, welcoming atmosphere, and the staff were incredibly friendly, making our meal even more enjoyable.

Before dinner, we made a pit stop at Shikoku Shop 88. This souvenir shop is a treasure trove of local crafts and delicacies from all four prefectures of Shikoku. I was on a mission to find some authentic Awa Odori dolls, while Liam was eyeing the local sake. Maya, of course, gravitated towards the sweets, and we ended up buying a selection of colorful candies and cookies. It was a great way to get a taste of the region's diverse offerings.

Dinner was at Hattorikun, a local restaurant known for its traditional Japanese cuisine. We savored the delicate flavors of fresh sashimi and grilled fish, accompanied by local sake. The atmosphere was cozy and intimate, providing a perfect end to our first day in Shikoku. As we walked back to our guesthouse, the night air was filled with the sounds of crickets and the faint scent of cherry blossoms. It was a magical moment that encapsulated the essence of Shikoku.

As I reflect on our first day, I'm filled with a sense of excitement for what lies ahead. Tomorrow, we're heading to Matsuyama to explore Matsuyama Castle and relax at Dogo Onsen. I'm particularly looking forward to experiencing one of Japan's oldest onsen towns and immersing ourselves in its rich history and culture.
I'm also reminded of how fortunate I am to share these experiences with my family. Liam's steady presence and Maya's infectious enthusiasm make every adventure even more meaningful. It's these shared moments that create lasting memories and strengthen our bond as a family.
And though I missed packing sunscreen, I am grateful for the experiences of today and ready for tomorrow!
Until then, oyasumi nasai from Shikoku!
