Echoes of the Past and Spiritual Heights

Today was a day of diving deep into the heart of Shikoku, exploring its folklore and spiritual heritage. It’s amazing how much history and culture can be packed into a single day, and I'm so excited to share our experiences with you all. From ancient samurai tales to serene temple visits, every moment felt like a step back in time.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Osusowake Shokudo Mado. This wasn't just a meal; it was an experience. The warm, inviting atmosphere made us feel right at home, and the food was prepared with such care and love. It reminded me of the community meals we used to have back in Tiberias, where everyone brought a dish to share. It's these simple, shared moments that truly connect us. The kids enjoyed it as well. Maya loved the bright piano music.

After breakfast, we set off to explore the Heike Yashiki Museum of Folklore. The museum is housed in a traditional thatched-roof house built in 1867, and it's like stepping back in time. It was fascinating to learn about the Heike clan, their role in the Genpei War, and their eventual downfall. The museum is filled with artifacts and exhibits that illustrate the lives of these warriors, including clothing, weaponry, and other historical objects.

The Heike Yashiki Museum of Folklore was more than just a collection of old artifacts; it was a portal into the past. As we wandered through the rooms, I could almost hear the echoes of the Heike warriors, feel their struggles, and understand their way of life. The museum is designated as a tangible cultural property of Miyoshi City, and the thatched-roof main house and storehouse have been preserved in their original state. Inside the main house, a fire still burns every day in the sunken hearth room, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. The kids were captivated by the stories of samurai and ancient battles, while Liam and I appreciated the intricate details of the traditional architecture.

The gardens surrounding the house were equally enchanting, with flowering trees that are approximately 800 years old. As we strolled through the garden, we marveled at the ancient trees and the serene beauty of the landscape. The views looking out into Oboke were wonderful. It was a perfect spot to reflect on the history we had just learned and to appreciate the natural beauty of Shikoku.

One of the highlights of the museum was the collection of antiques and relics, most of which date back well over a century. From ancient scrolls to samurai armor, each item told a story of a bygone era. It was a powerful reminder of the rich history and cultural heritage of Japan.

Sometimes, the most profound lessons are learned not from grand monuments, but from the quiet echoes of everyday lives preserved in folklore.

After immersing ourselves in history, we drove to Umpenji Temple, the 66th temple on the Shikoku pilgrimage. Perched high in the mountains, the temple offered breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. The drive up was an adventure in itself, with winding roads and stunning vistas at every turn.

Umpenji Temple has a history of 1,200 years, and its principal image, the Senju Kannon Bosatsu (Thousand-armed Goddess of Mercy), is enshrined here. In addition to its history, the temple is also noted for its seasonal changes, such as hydrangeas in early summer, autumn leaves in fall, and snowy landscapes in winter. Unpenji Summit Park has become a popular photo spot in recent years, with its swing in the sky and other attractions.

As we explored the temple grounds, we were struck by the sense of peace and tranquility that permeated the air. The temple is surrounded by thousand-year-old cedars, and the sound of the wind rustling through the trees was incredibly soothing. We lit incense, offered prayers, and took a moment to simply be present in this sacred space.

Maya was fascinated by the statues of Buddha's disciples, and we spent some time trying to find a statue that looked like each of us. It was a fun and lighthearted way to connect with the temple's history and spirituality. Liam appreciated the intricate details of the temple's architecture, while I was moved by the sense of reverence and devotion that filled the air.

For lunch, we stopped at Yuzuan Restaurant. This place is known for its quirky decor and delicious food. The restaurant is filled with intriguing objects from the owner's personal collection, from a large shark statue to a small version of the famous Cat Bus from the Ghibli classic My Neighbor Totoro.

The menu was disguised as a newspaper, and the chopstick covers were beloved local collectibles. It was all part of the fun. Despite the quirky decor, the food was seriously good. We tried the signature omuraisu (a Japanese-style omelet filled with rice and covered with demi-glace sauce) and katsuo no tataki (seared tuna). Both were delicious. Liam even considered trying the katsuo sundae, an ice cream parfait featuring seared slices of tuna, but decided against it. Maybe next time!

As the day drew to a close, we found ourselves at Amekaze Shokudo for dinner. This restaurant had a cozy atmosphere and served amazing food. It's a stylish little cafe that transforms into a bar at night.

After dinner, Liam and I decided to check out Bar Salvador. It was the perfect way to unwind after a busy day. The bar had a vibrant atmosphere and a great selection of drinks. We enjoyed chatting with the friendly staff and mingling with the locals. Bar Salvador is known for its signature drinks, which incorporate local flavors and ingredients. I tried a cocktail made with yuzu, a local citrus fruit, and it was delicious. Liam stuck with his usual beer, but he enjoyed the lively vibe of the bar.

Looking ahead to tomorrow, we're planning a trip to Shikoku Karst and Todoroki Falls. I've heard that Shikoku Karst is a stunning natural landscape with rolling hills and panoramic views. And Todoroki Falls promises to be a refreshing and invigorating experience. I can't wait to share our adventures with you all!

Today was a reminder of why I love to travel. It's not just about seeing new places; it's about immersing ourselves in different cultures, connecting with people, and creating lasting memories with my family. And Shikoku Island has certainly captured my heart.

Until tomorrow,

Yael
