A Day of Reflection and Natural Beauty

Today was a day of contrasts, a blend of historical reflection and immersion in the serene beauty of Shikoku's landscapes. It’s amazing how much history is packed into every corner of Japan, and how effortlessly it coexists with the country's stunning natural environment. Liam, Maya, and I set out with a plan to explore more of Kochi Prefecture, and the day unfolded into a series of memorable experiences.

Our morning began with a hearty breakfast at Hattorikun. It’s always a treat to start the day with local flavors, and Hattorikun didn't disappoint. I even tried to say Ohha! like Shingo Mama while ordering, but Maya just giggled.

Meeting the Samurai at Kochi Station

After breakfast, we headed to Kochi Station to see the Statues of the Three Tosa Samurai. These statues—Sakamoto Ryoma, Takechi Hanpeita, and Nakaoka Shintaro—stand proudly in front of the station, embodying the spirit of the Meiji Restoration. It's hard to believe these statues are made of styrofoam to withstand typhoons. Standing before them, I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe and respect for their contributions to Japan's modernization. Liam, ever the history buff, shared some interesting facts about each samurai, while Maya was fascinated by their imposing figures.

History is not just a collection of dates and names, but a narrative of human endeavor, sacrifice, and transformation.

It’s humbling to stand in a place where history was made, to imagine the energy and passion that fueled these individuals to fight for a better future. I thought about my own journey, from Tiberias to Kelowna, and how the decisions of those who came before me have shaped my present. The stories of these samurai resonate with the universal human desire for progress and justice.

Tranquility at Lake Sameura

Leaving the bustling station, we drove to Lake Sameura, a man-made lake created by the Sameura Dam. The drive itself was a treat, winding through lush green hills and small villages. As we approached the lake, the landscape opened up, revealing a vast expanse of water surrounded by forested mountains. The air was fresh and clean, a welcome change from the city.

Lake Sameura is the largest dam in Shikoku, and it’s an impressive sight. The dam was built in 1975 on the Yoshino River and is an impressive piece of modern engineering. We took a leisurely walk along the shore, soaking in the peaceful atmosphere. Maya, of course, couldn't resist skipping stones, while Liam and I simply enjoyed the view. The lake is surrounded by over 2000 Somei-Yoshino cherry blossom trees. I can only imagine how beautiful it must be during cherry blossom season.

I learned that Sameura Dam supplies water to Takamatsu, Kagawa Prefecture and Tokushima Prefecture. There was a water supply crisis in 2005 because of little rainfall, and Lake Sameura dried up twice.

We considered visiting the Sameura Tent Park, which has family sites with views of the lake. We also saw the Sameura Canoe Terrace, where you can book activities and has a pleasant cafe. Instead, we found a quiet spot for a picnic, enjoying the simple pleasure of sandwiches and fresh fruit with a view. It was a perfect moment of family bonding, away from the distractions of modern life.

Culinary Delights and Evening Reflections

For lunch, we stopped at Eki-mae Shokudo in Otoyo. This restaurant is known for its authentic Japanese regional cuisine and emphasis on fresh, locally sourced ingredients. The warm ambiance and friendly service made it an inviting spot for both locals and tourists alike. I tried one of their seasonal specialties, and it was a true taste of the Kochi region.

As evening approached, we made our way back to Kochi City for dinner at Yoronotaki Gomenten. This traditional Japanese izakaya offered a cozy atmosphere and a wide variety of dishes. We sampled several local specialties, including some delicious seafood and grilled meats. It was a great way to unwind after a day of exploring.

Before heading back to our accommodation, we decided to check out BAR OOKUNI. The lively ambiance and delicious drinks made for a perfect end to the day. I was happy to find a place where we could relax and enjoy each other's company.

Looking Ahead

Tomorrow, we’re planning to venture into the Iya Valley to see the Oku-Iya Double Vine Bridge [see tomorrow's itinerary]. I’m also excited about the prospect of riding the Bizan Ropeway for panoramic views. It promises to be another day filled with adventure and discovery, and I can’t wait to share it with you all. I'm also hoping to stop by the Mountain bookshop [see tomorrow's itinerary].

As I reflect on today, I’m reminded of the importance of balancing historical appreciation with natural immersion. Japan, and Shikoku in particular, offers a unique opportunity to do just that. The blend of ancient traditions and modern life, of bustling cities and tranquil landscapes, creates a rich tapestry of experiences that I am so grateful to be sharing with my family. And as we continue our journey, I’m excited to uncover more of the hidden gems that this island has to offer.
