Seeking Serenity in Kyoto's Ancient Gardens

Today was a beautiful blend of tranquility and indulgence in Kyoto. The crisp January air, though cold, felt refreshing as we set out to explore some of the city's most cherished spots. It’s amazing how much history and beauty is packed into every corner here.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Anzukko. I had read so many reviews about their gyoza, and I was excited to start our day with a local favorite. The small, cozy restaurant was just what we needed to fuel up for a day of exploring. I opted for the set menu, which included a variety of their inventive gyoza flavors. The crispy, thin skins and flavorful fillings were a delightful start to the day, and Hanna especially loved the pork and garlic chives gyoza. Maximilian enjoyed a local beer, while I sipped on some green tea, soaking in the authentic Japanese bar vibes.

After breakfast, we made our way to Nanzen-ji, a Zen Buddhist temple known for its stunning architecture and serene gardens. As we walked through the temple gates, a sense of calm washed over me. The crisp winter air and the quiet hum of the temple grounds were a welcome change from the bustling city streets. The temple, founded in the 13th century, has played a central role in Zen Buddhism for centuries. As we wandered through the grounds, I couldn't help but reflect on the temple's rich history and its enduring influence on Japanese culture.

One of the highlights of Nanzen-ji was the Sanmon gate, which offered a breathtaking view of the surrounding area. Climbing the gate, I was struck by the panoramic vista of Kyoto, a beautiful blend of traditional architecture and natural landscapes. The sheer scale of the gate and the intricate details of its construction were truly impressive.

The beauty of Kyoto lies not just in its famous landmarks, but in the quiet moments of reflection found in its serene gardens and historic temples.

The Hojo Garden was another must-see spot within Nanzen-ji. The carefully arranged rocks and tranquil water features created a sense of harmony and balance. It was the perfect place to pause and reflect, embracing the Zen philosophy of simplicity and connection with nature. Even in January, the garden had a subtle beauty, with the evergreens providing a splash of color against the muted tones of the rocks and sand.

Next, we strolled through Maruyama Park, a public space known for its natural beauty. Even though it's January and not cherry blossom season, the park had a quiet charm. I could only imagine how beautiful it must be in spring, filled with blooming sakura trees. We took a leisurely walk, enjoying the peaceful atmosphere and the beautiful scenery. I made a mental note to return during cherry blossom season someday.

Hanna enjoyed running around and playing, while Maximilian and I took in the scenery. I found a quiet spot to sit and sketch in my travel journal, capturing the essence of the park in winter. We spent a relaxing hour there, soaking up the tranquility before our next culinary adventure.

For lunch, we had reservations at Kobe Beef Steak Restaurant MOURIYA GION. This was an experience I had been looking forward to since planning the trip. I had heard so much about Kobe beef, and I was eager to try it for myself. The restaurant was elegant and refined, with a modern interior that created a comfortable and calm atmosphere. We were seated at a counter where we could watch the chef prepare our meal on a teppan hot plate.

We opted for the Kobe filet, and it was worth every penny. The beef was incredibly tender and flavorful, melting in my mouth with each bite. The chef meticulously grilled each element, from the top-tier beef to the meticulously selected ingredients sourced from Kyoto. The meal thoughtfully included soup, salad, and an array of vegetables. The chef prepared garlic chips, which were the perfect companion to the beef. Maximilian and I savored every moment, while Hanna enjoyed her perfectly cooked steak with a side of rice.

In the late afternoon, we did some shopping at Kyoto LOFT. I was looking for some unique stationery and souvenirs, and I knew this multi-story emporium would have just what I needed. The store offered an eclectic mix of stylish and practical items, from innovative home goods to trendy accessories. I found some beautiful calligraphy brushes and ink for myself, as well as some fun, quirky gifts for friends back home. Hanna was thrilled with a set of colorful pens and stickers, and Maximilian picked up a stylish new wallet.

As evening approached, we prepared for our dinner at French Dining Top of Kyoto, located in the Rihga Royal Hotel. The restaurant is Kyoto's only revolving restaurant, offering panoramic views of the city. I had made a reservation specifically to experience the stunning 360-degree scenery, and it did not disappoint. As the restaurant slowly rotated, we were treated to breathtaking views of Kyoto's historic skyline and surrounding mountains.

The French cuisine was exquisite, blending classic techniques with local ingredients. We opted for the tasting menu, which included dishes like lobster, Wagyu steak, and a selection of fine wines. Each dish was beautifully presented and expertly prepared. Hanna was fascinated by the rotating views, and the staff was incredibly attentive, making sure she had a memorable dining experience.

The interior of the restaurant was adorned with handmade karakami, woodblock printed designs from Kira Karacho, a historic artisan atelier in business since 1624, creating a unique and elegant atmosphere. The combination of the stunning views, the exquisite cuisine, and the elegant interior made for an unforgettable evening.

As we headed back to Hotel Resol Kyoto Kawaramachi Sanjo, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the experiences of the day. Kyoto had once again captivated me with its blend of tradition and modernity, its serene gardens and vibrant city life. I felt a sense of peace and contentment, knowing that we were creating memories that would last a lifetime.

Tomorrow marks the last day of our family cultural adventure in Kyoto. We plan to visit the Kyoto Railway Museum and Toei Kyoto Studio Park, followed by a relaxing drink at Bar Fishbowl. It’s bittersweet to think our trip is coming to an end, but I am excited for our last day of exploration.

Before drifting off to sleep, I made sure to repack our bags and double-check our essentials for tomorrow. I also realized that I had forgotten to pack an umbrella and a Japanese phrasebook. I made a mental note to pick them up on our next trip to Japan, as they would definitely come in handy.

I am already looking forward to sharing more stories and photos from our final day in Kyoto. Until then, goodnight from Japan!
