My day began with a hearty breakfast at El Tupay Restaurant. I opted for the local favorite, a quinoa porridge with fresh fruit, which provided a delightful and nutritious start to what promised to be a busy day. I always appreciate trying the local cuisine; it’s a window into the culture and traditions of a place. Afterwards, I set off towards the Cochahuasi Animal Sanctuary.

The drive to Cochahuasi was scenic, offering glimpses of the vast Andean landscape. As we ascended, the air grew crisper, and the views became more panoramic. The sanctuary is located about 30 minutes outside of Cusco, and the journey itself was a treat.
Upon arrival at Cochahuasi Animal Sanctuary, I was immediately struck by the dedication of the people working there. This isn’t just a place to see animals; it’s a haven for creatures rescued from trafficking and mistreatment. The sanctuary provides a safe and nurturing environment for these animals to recover and, in some cases, be rehabilitated for release back into the wild.
I had the chance to meet several of the residents, including majestic Andean condors, playful pumas, and adorable alpacas. Each animal has a story, often a sad one of illegal capture or neglect, but the staff's commitment to their well-being is truly inspiring. Hearing their stories made me reflect on the importance of responsible tourism and supporting organizations that prioritize animal welfare.
Visiting Cochahuasi is not just about seeing animals; it's about understanding the importance of conservation and the responsibility we have to protect these incredible species.
One of the highlights was getting to feed the alpacas. These gentle creatures were so curious and friendly, and it was heartwarming to interact with them in such a positive way. I also learned about the sanctuary's efforts to educate the local community about the importance of wildlife conservation. It’s wonderful to see an organization that is not only rescuing animals but also working to prevent future harm through education.
Leaving Cochahuasi, I felt a sense of gratitude for the work they do and a renewed commitment to supporting ethical travel practices. It’s places like this that remind me of the impact we can have as travelers, both positive and negative, and the importance of making informed choices.
For lunch, I decided to try Chull's - Peruvian Cuisine & Craft Beer, enticed by its promise of authentic Peruvian flavors and locally brewed beer. The restaurant had a cozy and inviting atmosphere, and the menu was filled with tempting options. I settled on the trout, a regional specialty, paired with a refreshing craft beer made with local ingredients. The flavors were vibrant and delicious, a true celebration of Peruvian gastronomy.

After lunch, I headed back towards Cusco, my destination this time being the Cusco Planetarium. Located on a hillside near the Sacsayhuaman archaeological site, the planetarium offers a unique opportunity to explore the cosmos through the lens of Inca astronomy.

The planetarium is run by a local family passionate about sharing their knowledge of the stars and the Inca worldview. The experience began with an informative talk about Inca cosmology, explaining how the ancient civilization used the stars for navigation, agriculture, and religious purposes. It was fascinating to learn about the constellations they recognized and the stories they told about them.
Following the talk, we had the opportunity to observe the night sky through telescopes. Although the clouds initially threatened to obscure our view, they eventually parted, revealing the moon and several stars. The guides were incredibly knowledgeable, pointing out constellations and sharing insights about the celestial bodies. It was a humbling experience to contemplate the vastness of the universe and our place within it.
Before heading to dinner, I did a little shopping at Centro Textil Acllas Cusco. I love supporting local artisans, and this textile center is known for its high-quality, traditionally woven goods. I ended up buying a beautiful alpaca scarf, a perfect souvenir to remind me of my time in Cusco and a practical item for the cooler evenings.

For dinner, I chose Morena Peruvian Kitchen, drawn in by its reputation for innovative Peruvian cuisine. The restaurant had a stylish and modern ambiance, and the menu featured creative interpretations of classic dishes. I opted for the Lomo Saltado, a traditional stir-fry, but with a contemporary twist. The flavors were exquisite, and the presentation was impeccable. It was the perfect way to end a day filled with exploration and discovery. I overheard other patrons raving about the Ceviche, and the excellent service.

I'm already looking forward to tomorrow, when I plan to visit the Cusco Cathedral and the Regional Historical Museum of Cusco. I might even check out Ukukus Music Club - Bar in the evening, after dinner at Inka Grill. Good night from Cusco!
