Whispers of the Past, Tastes of Today

Today was a day of venturing just outside of Cusco to explore the fascinating ruins that dot the landscape, remnants of the Inca civilization. It’s always a humbling experience to walk where history was made, to touch the stones that have stood for centuries, and to imagine the lives of those who came before us. And, of course, no exploration is complete without indulging in the local flavors, so I made sure to sample some of Cusco's culinary offerings as well.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Mama Seledonia. The cafe was only a short walk away from Polo Cusco Suites. After a quick glance at the menu, I decided to go with the combo gordo, a dish that had eggs served on toast, bacon, sausage, beans, potatoes and tomatoes. I also ordered a jugo de maracuya y naranja to go along with the meal. The breakfast gave me enough energy to last the whole day!

First on the itinerary was Tambomachay, often referred to as 'El Baño del Inca' or the Bath of the Inca. The crisp morning air nipped at my cheeks as I arrived, but the beauty of the site quickly warmed me. Tambomachay is an incredible example of Inca hydraulic engineering. The precision with which the stones were carved and fitted together to create aqueducts, canals, and waterfalls is truly astounding. It’s easy to see why water was considered sacred by the Incas; the way it flows through Tambomachay, seemingly eternally, is mesmerizing.

The site consists of a series of aqueducts, canals, and waterfalls that run through the terraced rocks. As I wandered through the site, I couldn't help but marvel at the ingenuity of the Incas. The water still flows freely through the channels, just as it has for centuries. It’s a testament to their advanced understanding of engineering and their deep respect for nature.

I learned that the exact function of Tambomachay is still debated by historians. Some believe it was a military outpost, guarding the approaches to Cusco. Others suggest it was a spa resort for the Inca elite, a place for relaxation and purification. Still others believe it served a religious purpose, with the water used in sacred rituals. Whatever its true purpose, there’s no denying the site's beauty and significance.

From Tambomachay, it was a short distance to Puka Pukara, an archaeological complex that stands in stark contrast to the lush greenery surrounding Tambomachay. Puka Pukara, meaning 'Red Fortress' in Quechua, is named for the reddish hue of the stones used in its construction. It is believed that Puka Pukara was constructed during the reign of Emperor Pachacutec. The red hue of the stones was especially vibrant under the afternoon sun.

As I explored the complex, I imagined what life must have been like here centuries ago. The Incas were incredibly skilled builders, and the walls and structures of Puka Pukara are a testament to their craftsmanship. I learned that Puka Pukara is located on the road to Pisac, about 7 kilometers from Cusco. While its name suggests it was a fortress, its exact purpose remains a mystery. Some historians believe it was a tambo, a resting place for travelers and the Inca’s personal guards. Others suggest it may have been a religious site or a military checkpoint.

The complex features terraces, walls, aqueducts, squares, and stairways, all built using stones of various sizes. Unlike some other Inca sites, the stones here are not as finely worked, leading some to believe that Puka Pukara was not of great religious importance. However, it was certainly of strategic importance, given its location along the Qhapaq Ñan, the Inca road system. As I walked along the ancient stones, I thought about Hanna and Maximilian back home in Heidelberg. I made a mental note to find a good book about the Incas to read to Hanna when I return. I know she would be fascinated by their history and their incredible building skills.

To truly appreciate a culture, one must immerse oneself in both its history and its flavors.

After a morning of exploring ancient ruins, my stomach was rumbling, reminding me that it was time to indulge in some of Cusco's culinary delights. For lunch, I ventured to Ceviche Seafood Kitchen, drawn in by its promise of fresh seafood and traditional Peruvian flavors. Ceviche Seafood Kitchen was conveniently located near Plaza de Armas. The restaurant was bright and modern, with a welcoming atmosphere. I decided to try their signature dish: El Trio, which included ceviche, seafood risotto, and fried seafood. The ceviche was tangy and refreshing, the seafood risotto was creamy and flavorful, and the fried seafood was crispy and delicious. It was the perfect way to sample a variety of Peruvian seafood dishes in one sitting. The seafood was incredibly fresh, and the flavors were vibrant and exciting. It was a delightful culinary experience that left me feeling satisfied and energized for the rest of the day.

As the sun began to set, casting a golden glow over Cusco, I made my way to Inkazuela for dinner. Located in Plazoleta Nazarenas, the restaurant occupies an old colonial house with spectacular views of monuments, churches and the White Christ. Inkazuela specializes in Peruvian stews, and the menu featured a variety of mouthwatering options. I decided on the Inkazuela Cocino Andino, a lamb and chicken stew. The stew was served piping hot in a beautiful earthenware bowl, accompanied by two pieces of fresh-baked bread. The flavors were rich and complex, with a hint of spice that warmed me from the inside out. The lamb and chicken were tender and flavorful, and the vegetables were perfectly cooked. It was the perfect comfort food after a long day of exploring.

Before heading back to the hotel, I decided to stop by Black Cat Bar Cusco - Craft Cocktails & Spirits for a nightcap. I had heard great things about their craft cocktails, and I was eager to try them for myself. The bar was cozy and intimate, with a speakeasy vibe that made me feel like I had stepped back in time. The bartenders were skilled mixologists, passionate about their craft, and the cocktail menu was creative and inventive. I ordered a cocktail made with local spirits and ingredients, and it was expertly crafted and delicious. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploring and indulging in the flavors of Cusco.

As I reflect on today's adventures, I am struck by the incredible blend of history, culture, and cuisine that Cusco has to offer. From the ancient ruins of Tambomachay and Puka Pukara to the vibrant flavors of Mama Seledonia, Ceviche Seafood Kitchen, and Black Cat Bar, every experience has been a feast for the senses. Tomorrow, I plan to visit the Cochahuasi Animal Sanctuary and the Cusco Planetarium. I’m looking forward to learning more about the local wildlife and the stars above. I also plan to do some shopping at Centro Textil Acllas Cusco. I'm hoping to find some unique souvenirs to bring home to Hanna and Maximilian.

Good night from Cusco! I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.
