Herat Citadel Travel Guide

The Citadel of Herat, or Arg-e Herat, is a historical fort located in the center of Herat, Afghanistan [7]. Its origins stretch back to 330 BC when Alexander the Great arrived in Afghanistan [7, 9]. Over the past two millennia, numerous empires have utilized it as their headquarters, resulting in repeated destruction and reconstruction [7]. The current structure largely dates back to 1415, constructed by Shah Rukh after Timur's devastation [10]. The citadel has been extensively renovated between 2006 and 2011, a collaborative effort involving Afghan craftsmen and funding from the Aga Khan Trust for Culture, as well as contributions from the U.S. and German governments [7].The citadel's architecture showcases the artistry of the Timurid period, featuring towering walls, robust towers, gates, and expansive courtyards [5].
