Discover more about Herat Citadel

Towering over the Old City, the Herat Citadel has been a silent observer of Herat's triumphs and tribulations for centuries [2]. The oldest building in Herat, it is believed to stand on the foundations of a fort built by Alexander the Great around 330 BC [2, 5]. Throughout its long history, the Citadel has served many roles, including as a seat of power, a military stronghold, and a prison until 2005 when the Afghan army handed it over to the Ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism [2]. The present structure largely dates back to 1415, constructed under Shah Rukh after Timur's destruction [2]. The exterior once featured Kufic script proclaiming the castle's grandeur, but sadly, only a small section on the northwest 'Timurid Tower' remains [2]. Over the centuries, the Citadel suffered damage from repeated conquests, with locals repurposing its roof beams and bricks [2]. In 1953, an order for its complete demolition was thankfully halted by King Zahir Shah [2]. An extensive renovation program, launched in the 1970s and completed just before the Soviet invasion, has helped to restore the Citadel to its former glory [2]. Visitors enter through the modern western entrance to the lower enclosure and are guided through an imposing wooden gate to the upper enclosure [2]. This heavily fortified section features wells used to withstand sieges [2]. Archaeological excavations continue in the main courtyard, and a small hammam displays beautifully painted walls [2]. The Citadel's curtain wall offers stunning views over Herat, including Chahar Su to the south and the Musalla Complex minarets to the north [2, 13]. The National Museum of Herat is housed within the citadel, showcasing around 1,100 items from the Herat region [4, 17].
