Discover more about Babur Garden

Bagh-e Babur is one of Kabul's most significant historical and cultural landmarks, dating back to the Timurid era [6]. Established around 1504 by Babur, the founder of the Mughal Empire, the garden served as a pleasure retreat and later his tomb [2, 3]. Babur, who deeply appreciated nature, chose this location as his final resting place [6, 11]. The garden is located on the slopes of Kuh-e Sher Darwaza, southwest of the old city of Kabul [2]. Designed in the classic charbagh (four-garden) pattern, Bagh-e Babur features 15 terraces split by a central watercourse [2, 13, 11]. The garden has been re-developed by various Afghan rulers [3]. Over the centuries, the garden has been renovated, reflecting both Timurid and Mughal architectural styles [2, 6]. Visitors can explore the white marble mosque built by Shah Jahan in 1647, and a caravanserai planned to open as a visitor center [13, 2]. The tomb of Babur is located on the top terrace [3, 13]. Bagh-e Babur suffered significant damage during the Afghan Civil War (1992–1996) [3, 19]. However, extensive restoration efforts began in 2002 by the Aga Khan Trust for Culture, in collaboration with the Afghan Ministry of Information and Culture and Kabul Municipality [3, 6]. Today, Bagh-e Babur is not only a historical site but also a popular recreational space for locals and tourists, hosting cultural and artistic festivals [4, 12].
