Discover more about Babur Garden

Bagh-e Babur, also known as the Gardens of Babur, is a significant historical site in Kabul, Afghanistan, dating back to the 16th century [3, 15]. Founded by the first Mughal Emperor, Babur, around 1528, the garden served as a place for recreation and relaxation during his lifetime [2, 4]. After his death in 1530, Babur was buried here, fulfilling his desire to be laid to rest in his beloved Kabul [2, 10]. The garden then became a place of veneration for his successors [9]. The garden is laid out as a series of 15 terraced levels on a hillside, offering stunning views of Kabul [9, 10]. A central axis runs through the garden from east to west [9]. The tomb of Babur is located on the fourteenth terrace [10]. Emperor Shah Jahan added a small white marble mosque southwest of the tomb on the next lower terrace in 1645-46 [3, 10]. Over the centuries, the garden has seen many changes. In the late 19th century, Amir Abdur Rahman Khan constructed a pavilion and residence for his wife, Bibi Halima, incorporating European influences [2, 3, 10]. In the 1930s, the area was converted into a public park with pools and fountains [3, 10]. Restoration efforts began in 2002, led by the Aga Khan Trust for Culture, to revitalize this cultural landmark [4]. Today, Bagh-e Babur attracts many visitors who come to stroll through the gardens, relax, and enjoy the beautiful scenery [2, 5]. The site is also used for cultural and artistic festivals [2].
