Herat Citadel: A Living Testament to Afghan History

The Citadel of Herat, or Qala Ikhtyaruddin, is a magnificent fortress located in the heart of Herat, Afghanistan [6, 8]. Its origins are believed to date back to 330 BC when Alexander the Great arrived in the region [6, 7]. Throughout its long history, the citadel has been a silent witness to the rise and fall of empires, enduring destruction and reconstruction, and serving various roles from a seat of power to a military stronghold [4, 6].The current structure largely dates back to 1415, built by Shah Rukh after Timur's destruction [4, 7]. The citadel's imposing walls, stretching 250 meters east to west, feature 18 towers rising over 30 meters high, showcasing the architectural prowess of the Timurid era [4, 8]. Although time has weathered away much of its original tilework, a small section on the northwest wall, known as the 'Timurid Tower,' still displays the grandeur of its past [4].In 1953, the citadel faced near demolition when a local army commander sought to relocate his military base. Fortunately, intervention by King Zahir Shah saved it from destruction [4]. After years of neglect, an extensive renovation program was launched in the 1970s and completed just before the Soviet invasion [4]. The most recent restoration occurred between 2006 and 2011, funded by the Aga Khan Trust for Culture, the U.S. government, and the German government [6].Visitors today can explore the citadel's two main enclosures, climb the ramparts, and wander through the courtyards [18]. The National Museum of Herat, located within the citadel, displays a rich collection of artifacts, traditional clothing, and photographs illustrating the region's history and culture [6, 18]. The views from the top of the citadel offer stunning panoramic vistas of Herat and the surrounding landscape [13, 18].
