Herat Citadel: Guardian of History

The Citadel of Herat, or Qala Ikhtyaruddin, stands as a silent witness to over 2300 years of Afghan history [4, 6]. Rising from an artificial mound, the fortress has been a strategic point since its supposed founding by Alexander the Great in 330 BC [4, 5, 8, 9]. Over the millennia, it has been destroyed and rebuilt by empires and dynasties, including the Ghaznavids, Karts, Timurids, and Mughals [5, 9, 13]. The citadel's imposing walls, stretching 250 meters east to west, and its 18 towers, rising over 30 meters high, reflect its long history as a military stronghold [4]. The citadel has served as a seat of power, a military garrison, and even a prison [4]. After years of war and neglect, the Citadel underwent extensive renovation between 2006 and 2011, funded by international organizations and Afghan craftsmen [8, 9]. Today, visitors can explore the two main walled enclosures, climb the ramparts, and wander through the courtyards [20]. The National Museum of Herat is housed within the citadel, showcasing artifacts, traditional clothing, and photographs that illustrate the region's rich history and culture [6, 8, 20].
