Overview
Step back in time at the Fort Mitchell Historic Site, a park and archaeological site that was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1990 [7]. This living history museum offers a glimpse into Alabama's frontier past, focusing on the early 19th century [2, 5, 10]. The site is located 8 miles south of Phenix City, Alabama [3].The centerpiece is a reconstruction of the 1813 stockade fort, an important United States military post during the Creek War [5, 7]. Explore the grounds and imagine life as a soldier or settler during this tumultuous period [2]. The Visitor Center houses a museum with artifacts, exhibits, and a film presentation that describe the events and history between 1813 and 1860 [2, 3]. See arrowheads, tools, firearms and household items [2, 3]. Dioramas bring to life the stories of soldiers, settlers, and Creek Indians, providing a visual narrative of the challenges and triumphs of the era [2].Also on site is a collection of historic carriages in the Carriage House, a restored 19th-century log home, and the Chattahoochee Indian Heritage Center, which features a ceremonial sacred Fire Sculpture of the Creek Nation [5, 16]. A memorial to the Trail of Tears serves as a reminder of the forced removal of the Creek people from their ancestral lands [16]. The nearby Fort Mitchell National Cemetery is the final resting place for approximately 5,000 individuals since opening in 1987 [2, 10].
