  • Driving

    The most direct way to approach Cheaha Wilderness is through Cheaha State Park. From I-20, take exit 191 and merge onto US 431 South. Follow US 431 for 3.8 miles and turn right onto County Road 131. In 0.6 miles, turn left onto AL 281 South, known as the Talladega Scenic Byway. Follow AL 281 for 12.5 miles and turn right into Cheaha State Park [23]. Day-use admission to the park, which provides access to trailheads into the wilderness, is $5 for adults (ages 12+), $2 for children (ages 4-11), and $2 for seniors (62+) [9, 18]. Parking is available at various trailheads within the park [5].

  • Public Transport

    For those using public transport from Birmingham, take a Greyhound bus or Amtrak train to Anniston [7]. From Anniston, a taxi or rideshare is required to reach Cheaha State Park and the wilderness area, costing approximately $70-$110 [7]. From Atlanta Airport (ATL), Groome Transportation offers a bus service to Oxford, AL. From Oxford, a taxi or rideshare would be needed to reach the park, with the total cost for the bus being $70 - $95 [20].

Cheaha Wilderness, designated by Congress in 1983, encompasses 7,245 acres of rugged beauty within the Talladega National Forest in Alabama [2, 14]. Adjacent to Cheaha State Park, the wilderness offers a unique experience with its elevated terrain, panoramic views, and diverse recreational activities [8, 14].The wilderness is best known for its section of the Pinhoti Trail, which stretches for approximately 10 miles across the area [14]. This trail, popular among hikers, follows a ridge system and crosses Cheaha Mountain, the highest point in Alabama at 2,407 feet [2, 6, 14]. The name 'Pinhoti' comes from the Creek Indians and means 'turkey's home,' reflecting the abundant wildlife in the area [2].Visitors can explore a network of trails, including the Chinnabee Silent Trail, known for its challenging terrain, and the Nubbin Creek Trail, which leads to the Pinhoti Trail [2, 10].
