Discover more about Springdale

Springdale, nestled in the heart of Andalusia, Alabama, is a captivating estate that whispers tales of a bygone era. Constructed in the early 1930s by John G. Scherf, a German multi-millionaire, textile businessman, and former mayor, Springdale reflects his vision of a modern home, boasting then-innovative features like heating, air conditioning, and telephones. The 5,630 square foot mansion itself is a sight to behold, featuring five bedrooms, six bathrooms, a formal living room, a formal dining room, a sun parlor, and a service kitchen. Many of the original features remain, including a chandelier and mantle shipped from Germany. The front doors, made of Salbron, weigh approximately 200 pounds each. The basement even housed Scherf's dark room, a space he used as a personal retreat. Outside, the 3.8-acre estate unfolds with rolling hills and terraces, showcasing azaleas, roses, and a lotus pond that predates the house itself. The grounds also feature a carriage house, now converted into a heated and air-conditioned space with a commercial kitchen, suitable for smaller events or as an expansion for larger gatherings. The city of Andalusia acquired Springdale to prevent its commercial development and now contracts NinetyFourInvestments to manage the property. Today, Springdale stands as a charming and elegant backdrop for weddings, corporate events, and parties, offering historical tours and welcoming clubs and organizations for meetings.
