Bamahenge: Alabama's Stonehenge Replica

Bamahenge, located near Barber Marina in Elberta, Alabama, is a full-scale fiberglass replica of the famous Stonehenge monument in England. Created by artist Mark Cline in 2012, commissioned by George Barber, it offers a unique and whimsical experience for tourists and locals alike. Bamahenge stands 21 feet tall and 104 feet across, mirroring the dimensions of the original Stonehenge. Cline even consulted with astronomers and historians to ensure the replica was accurately aligned with the summer solstice, just like its ancient counterpart. However, unlike the original, Bamahenge is constructed from fiberglass, using only four different shapes of "stones" to create the iconic structure. Originally intended for Barber's Vintage Motorsports Museum near Birmingham, the replica found its home on the grounds of Barber Marina. The name "Fiberhenge" was considered but ultimately rejected in favor of the catchier "Bamahenge." Visiting Bamahenge is free, and it's easily accessible. A small parking area off Barber Parkway leads to a short, 200-yard walk along a dirt path into the woods, where the monument sits in a grassy clearing. The fiberglass construction allows visitors to get up close and personal with the monument, offering a unique photo opportunity. Beyond Bamahenge, the surrounding area of Barber Marina features other unusual sculptures and installations by Mark Cline, including the "Lady in the Lake," dinosaur statues hidden in the woods, and various other pieces.
