Discover more about Fendall Hall

Fendall Hall, also known as the Young–Dent Home, stands as one of Alabama's most outstanding examples of Italianate architecture. Completed in 1860 for Edward Brown Young, a successful merchant and entrepreneur, the house reflects Eufaula's prosperity as a major river commerce town. Young, originally from New York, made his mark on Eufaula by contributing to the construction of the town's first bridge across the Chattahoochee River. He and his wife, Ann Fendall Beall, settled in Eufaula in 1837 and raised their family in this grand home. Fendall Hall remained in the family for five generations, eventually passing to Young's daughter, Anna Beall Young, and her husband, Stouten Hubert Dent. The house is particularly noted for the elaborate wall and ceiling murals in the entrance hall, parlor, and dining room. These hand-painted decorations, dating back to the 1880s, are considered among the finest surviving examples of their kind in the country. The interior has been carefully restored to reflect the period of 1880-1916, showcasing the tastes and styles of the Dent family. Visitors can admire period furnishings, including family items, primarily in the Empire and Eastlake styles.Other unique architectural features include a black and white Italian marble entry, eight carved Italian marble fireplace surrounds, Baccarat crystal chandeliers, and Bohemian cut glass pocket doors. The house also featured an advanced plumbing system for its time, supplied by a cistern in the attic. Today, Fendall Hall is owned by the Alabama Historical Commission and operated by the Friends of Fendall Hall. It serves as a historic house museum, offering guided tours and a glimpse into the lives of a prominent Southern family and the history of Eufaula.
