Discover more about Bellingrath Gardens & Home

Bellingrath Gardens & Home is more than just a garden; it's a journey through the vision of Walter and Bessie Bellingrath, who transformed a humble fishing camp into one of the South's most celebrated horticultural displays. In 1917, Walter Bellingrath, Mobile's first Coca-Cola bottler, sought a tranquil escape from his demanding work life. He purchased an abandoned fish camp along the Fowl River, a decision that would forever change the landscape of southern Alabama. His wife, Bessie, with her passion for flowers and gardens, began to cultivate the property, initially known as Belle Camp. By 1932, their private sanctuary had blossomed into a spectacle of floral beauty, prompting the Bellingraths to open their gardens to the public. The gardens quickly gained popularity, drawing thousands of visitors eager to witness the vibrant displays of azaleas, camellias, roses, and chrysanthemums. Recognizing the growing interest, the Bellingraths commissioned architect George B. Rogers to design a grand home that would complement the surrounding gardens. Completed in 1935, the 10,500-square-foot home was constructed using salvaged materials from historic Mobile buildings, including bricks from the birthplace of Alva Smith Vanderbilt Belmont and ironwork from the Southern Hotel. Today, visitors can explore the 15-room home, furnished with the Bellingraths' original antique collections of art, silver, china, and crystal. The gardens themselves are a testament to horticultural artistry, featuring themed areas such as the Asian Garden, the Rose Garden, and the Great Lawn. Seasonal events, including the Magic Christmas in Lights, add to the garden's allure, making it a destination for tourists year-round. Bellingrath Gardens & Home stands as a testament to the enduring power of love, vision, and dedication. It is a place where nature and history intertwine, offering visitors an unforgettable experience.
