Indian Shell Mound Park: A Glimpse into Dauphin Island's Past

Indian Shell Mound Park, also known as Shell Mound Park or Indian Mound Park, is an 11-acre park located on the northern shore of Dauphin Island [7, 9]. The park is named for the prehistoric shell middens, mounds composed of discarded oyster shells, created by Native Americans [9, 16]. These mounds date back to the Mississippian period (1100 to 1550 AD) [7, 9, 16]. For centuries, Native Americans of the Pensacola culture visited the island to harvest oysters and fish in the Little Dauphin Island Sound [9]. Archaeologists believe these visitors came from Bottle Creek, a major Mississippian settlement in the area [9].
