Majestic Caverns is located at 5181 Desoto Caverns Pkwy, Childersburg, AL 35044. From Childersburg, follow AL-76 N/Desoto Caverns Pkwy for approximately 5 miles. The entrance to Majestic Caverns will be on your left. Parking is free on-site. Be aware that during peak season, parking can be limited, especially on weekends. There are no tolls on this route.

If you are staying at the Majestic Caverns Campground, the caverns are within walking distance. Follow the designated paths from the campground to the main entrance of Majestic Caverns. The walk is short, but the path is a scenic trail leading up to the visitor's center. There is no cost associated with walking from the campground to the caverns.

Majestic Caverns, formerly known as DeSoto Caverns, is a captivating cave system and tourist attraction nestled in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains in Childersburg, Alabama. Touted as "Alabama's Big Cave," it offers a unique blend of natural beauty, historical significance, and family-friendly entertainment.The caverns themselves formed approximately three million years ago within a bed of limestone deposited nearly 500 million years ago. Humans have explored these caves for thousands of years, with evidence of Native American habitation dating back to the Archaic period (8,000 to 1000 BC). A 2,000-year-old burial site attributed to the Copena culture was discovered in 1965, containing the remains of five individuals. Caves were considered good burial spots because they offered a peaceful and protective environment for the spirits of the dead.The first recorded European discovery of the caverns was in 1540 by Spanish conquistador Hernando de Soto. In 1796, George Stiggens, a presidential agent, described the cave's beauty to President George Washington, marking it as the first officially recorded cave in the United States. During the Prohibition era in the 1920s, the cave even served as an underground speakeasy.Today, Majestic Caverns offers hour-long guided tours that delve into the history and geology of the caverns. Visitors can marvel at the stunning onyx-marble stalagmites and stalactites, some of the largest accumulations of their kind in the world.
