The Dothan Area Botanical Gardens, established in 1991, encompasses 50 acres of cultivated gardens, nature trails, and undeveloped, wooded landscape. The gardens have steadily developed under the leadership of an all-volunteer Board of Directors. The gardens feature a variety of themed areas, including a rose garden with 200 different rose plantings maintained by the Wiregrass Rose Society, which peak in May. The Southern Heirloom Garden preserves seeds and plants from the past, showcasing unique plants collected from across the Southeast. The Demonstration Garden features favorites such as okra, squash, turnips, collards, corn, flowers, and fruit trees. In late March, the Azalea Garden offers a striking display of colors. Other garden areas include the Herb Garden, Butterfly Garden, Camellia Garden, Hydrangea Garden, Shady Garden, Fern Glade, Cottage Garden, Daylily Garden, and Succulent Garden. The Dothan Area Botanical Gardens also hosts events and community activities, including seasonal festivals, educational workshops, and guided tours. Gardens Aglow, held from late November through December, transforms the gardens into a winter wonderland with thousands of Christmas lights and lighted holiday displays. The Wings of Wonder butterfly house is open seasonally from April through October. The gardens serve as an educational resource for children and adults in garden lore and environmental issues. They also promote tourism and economic development in southeast Alabama.
