Built in 1914-1915, the Opera House was envisioned by then-Mayor Buck Baker as a municipal auditorium and office space, reflecting Dothan's growth and aspirations. The building's design, a blend of Classical Revival and Italianate styles by Atlanta firm Morris & Morris, features arched entry doors, Ionic pilasters, and a parapet roof adorned with figurines of opera singers.Opening its doors on October 8, 1915, with a performance by a local orchestra, the Dothan Opera House quickly became a premier venue for vaudeville acts, minstrel shows, and symphony orchestras. During World War II, it served as a USO center, entertaining troops from nearby Napier Field. Over the years, the Opera House has hosted countless performances, community events, and even housed city offices until the construction of the Dothan Civic Center in 1974. A hidden mural behind the stage backdrop depicts the Opera House under construction and honors key figures and performances from its history.After a period of possible demolition, local preservationists rallied to protect the building, leading to its listing on the National Register of Historic Places in 1977. Recent renovations have further enhanced the Opera House, adding modern sound and lighting systems while preserving its historical charm.
