Discover more about Colonial Fort Condé

Colonial Fort Condé, located in the heart of downtown Mobile, Alabama, offers a captivating glimpse into the city's colonial past. Originally built by the French in 1723, the fort was a strategic stronghold, guarding Mobile and its vital port on the Gulf of Mexico. Throughout its history, Fort Condé changed hands among colonial powers, each leaving their mark. Initially named Fort Louis, it was later renamed Fort Condé to honor Louis Henri de Bourbon. When the British gained control in 1763, it became Fort Charlotte, and under Spanish rule from 1780, it was known as Fuerta Carlota. American troops occupied Mobile in 1813, reverting the fort's name to Fort Charlotte. By the 1820s, the fort was largely dismantled as it was no longer deemed necessary for defense. However, in the 1970s, renewed interest in Mobile's colonial history led to a partial reconstruction. Today, visitors can explore about one-third of the original compound, built at four-fifths scale. Inside, interactive exhibits and historical artifacts detail the lives of Native Americans and European colonists who shaped Mobile's early history. Walk the fort's walls for views of Mobile's skyline, a striking contrast between the 18th-century design and the modern cityscape. Living history demonstrations and special events further bring the past to life, including musketry demonstrations on Saturdays.
