Spanish Plaza Park: A Tribute to Mobile's Spanish Heritage

Spanish Plaza Park, situated in the heart of Mobile at 401 Government Street, stands as a tribute to the city's enduring connection with Spain. Created to honor Mobile's sister city, Malaga, Spain, the park recognizes Spain's profound historical influence on the region. Opened in 1969, it also acknowledges Spain's initial arrival on Alabama's shores with the Alonso Álvarez de Piñeda expedition in 1519. The park's centerpiece is a beautiful fountain encircled by ten arches, each symbolizing a city that played a vital role in the exploration and establishment of the United States. Dominating the plaza is a duplicate statue of Isabella la Catolica, the Queen of Spain who sponsored Christopher Columbus's voyages. Plaques and sculptures throughout the park pay homage to other prominent Spanish figures, including Bernardo de Galvez, who led the Spanish capture of Mobile from the British during the American Revolution, and Hernando De Soto, who explored the Southwest and discovered the Mississippi River. A marble mosaic coat of arms of Spain adds to the park's authentic Spanish ambiance. Spanish Plaza Park provides a serene escape within the bustling downtown area. Visitors can wander through the park, admire the statues and artwork, and contemplate the historical links between Mobile and Spain. The park serves as a venue for various events throughout the year. It is open daily from 7 am to 7 pm.
