Overview
Fort Gaines, located on the eastern tip of Dauphin Island, Alabama, has guarded the entrance to Mobile Bay for over 150 years. Established in 1821 and named for Edmund Pendleton Gaines, it's best known for its role in the Battle of Mobile Bay during the American Civil War. Visitors can explore the fort's well-preserved ramparts, original cannons, blacksmith shop, kitchens, a museum, and tunnel systems.The fort offers a glimpse into the past with guided tours led by costumed interpreters, including cannon firing and blacksmithing demonstrations. Exhibits detail the fort's history, including the famous command, 'Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead!' uttered by Admiral Farragut nearby. The anchor from Farragut's flagship, the USS Hartford, is also on display.Despite its historical significance, Fort Gaines faces ongoing threats from shoreline erosion and has been listed as one of America's Most Endangered Historic Sites.
