Discover more about Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge

Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge, whose name translates to “safe harbor” in French, is a 7,000-acre coastal sanctuary established in 1980 to protect threatened and endangered species and migratory bird habitats. The refuge encompasses some of Alabama's last remaining undisturbed coastal barrier habitats, providing a natural oasis amidst increasing development. The refuge is divided into several units, including Sand Bayou, Perdue, Little Point Clear, Fort Morgan, and Little Dauphin Island. Bon Secour's diverse landscape includes beaches, sand dunes, salt marshes, tidal creeks, and pine-oak woodlands. This variety supports an array of wildlife, making it a haven for nature enthusiasts. Birdwatching is a popular activity, with over 360 species of birds identified, especially during spring and fall migrations. The refuge provides critical habitat for the endangered Alabama beach mouse and nesting sea turtles like loggerhead, green, and Kemp's ridley. Visitors can explore the refuge via four designated hiking trails: Jeff Friend Trail, Centennial Trail, Pine Beach Trail, and Gator Lake Trail. Each trail offers unique opportunities for wildlife viewing and photography. The Jeff Friend Trail is a wheelchair-accessible, one-mile loop through coastal marshes and maritime forest. The Centennial Trail is a moderate 2-mile trail through maritime forest, swamp and dune swales. The Pine Beach Trail is around 1.65 miles, estimating around two hours to complete the entirety of the path. The Gator Lake Trail is a 1 mile trail along a dune ridge. Kayaking and canoeing are also popular, with a launch site at the Jeff Friend Trail providing access to Little Lagoon. The visitor contact station is open Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.. The trails and beach access locations are open from sunrise until sunset seven days a week.
