Overview
Fendall Hall, also known as the Young–Dent Home, stands as one of Alabama's most outstanding examples of Italianate architecture. Constructed between 1856 and 1860 by Edward Brown Young, a successful merchant and entrepreneur, the house reflects Eufaula's prosperity as a major shipping and trading center. Young, originally from New York, moved to Eufaula in 1837 and contributed significantly to the town's development, including organizing the construction of the first bridge across the Chattahoochee River. The house remained in the Young family for five generations. In 1879, it passed to Young's daughter, Anna Beall Young, and her husband, Stouten Hubert Dent, a Confederate Army captain. The interior is largely restored to reflect the period of their occupancy, from 1880 to 1916, showcasing the styles and colors popular at the time. The Alabama Historical Commission acquired Fendall Hall in 1973, preserving it as a historic house museum.Visitors can admire the home's architectural details, including the black-and-white Italian marble entry, carved Italian marble fireplace surrounds, Baccarat crystal chandeliers, and Bohemian cut glass pocket doors. The elaborate wall and ceiling murals in the entrance hall, parlor, and dining room are particularly noteworthy, considered some of the finest examples of this type of work in Alabama. These murals were created in the 1880s by a Mr. LaFranc. Fendall Hall also features a plumbing system fed by attic cisterns, a unique original feature for its time.
